One thing I like about Azathoth is when he fell asleep, the universe came to existence accidentally. And when he wakes up, it will end.

Honestly, I don't so much believe the latter, because it contricts the Dreamlands, a world we can enter while dreaming. So if you ask me, I think the universe should operate the same way, but for Azathoth.

I don't believe I have heard this before, interesting... so our existence is more or less hinging on Azathoth and Cthulhu staying asleep.Β  We better keep our voices down.

Well Cthulhu doesn't have the power to kill a universe. Planets? Sure, but, billions? No

If I understand the lore properly, Cthulhu isn't even a real god.

He's just their high priest!

....why did you respond to a message that was made two years ago? And true. But he has power to kill planets easily

I always love art of the gods in the Cthlulu mythos that aren't as recognized in the mainstream as the big squid himself. I love your interpretation of this monstrosity as well as the horrific servant of his, very nice work!

Thanks for the kind words! Β  I agree, there are so many other fascinating entities which are wholly overlooked while Cthulhu remains the only recognizable one.Β  I've spoken with companies who sell Lovecraftian items and they say by far Cthulhu outsells depictions of any others, I asked who came in second place and was told there is no second place... it's all Cthulhu.

What companies might these be, out of curiosity? I'd love to have some Lovecraftian decorations for myself.

One was Chaosium, Inc. (they make the Call of Cthulhu pen & paper role playing game), back when they have a different staff.Β  It was when I made a Cthulhu statue and was thinking about sculpting a different character.Β  From their experience they found non-Cthulhu statues to not sell so well.Β  Cthulhu is almost a household name these days, but most can't name a second.

This one is really interesting to comment on. I mentioned before to you how dark is an absence of light and yet dark inhabits a blank space thus giving shape and form to a blank void. This is a play off of that and not sure if this what you are going for. But a person looks at this and thinks nothing but a giant wall monster But who is to say this isn't just 0.0000000000000000000000000001% of the creature. Azathoth, a being so massive, powerful, imaginative, and even unstable, that he has his own space to complement him. This is where my statement on blank voids come from. Imagine dying and leaving your body with hopes of entering some grand paradise, or even a blank void where you exist as nothing. But instead you wake up to find yourself connect as a small section of flesh to a grand creature. I can see this through some of matrixing of human faces in the image. You now start to panic, you start to scream as you are nothing more than flesh of the dreamer, hoping for the Servitors of the outergods to play a song to bring you back to sleep.Β

This than leads to the servitor. According to lore they were the first born of the outer gods and are mere servants with no higher will outside of the song. This leads to questions of are they aware of their mortality, is there a sense of danger if they stop playing for azathoth, or is there really just an apathetic indifference as flute playing is no different than breathing for these creatures. It than leads to certain cold speculations, when there is no sound, when you have no tv or radio on, not even the wind and sounds of animal. We subconsciously hear a noise. A simple monotone frequency, the ultimate white noise as we become momentarily aware that something is making that noise. Is this the Serviture's song, becoming aware before we fall back to unconsciousness. Sometimes an imperfect dream may mean more than an perfect reality.

This leads to the final thing to note. Among all the organic feelings, the white sound, the writhing of your fellow dreamers. There is one eye popping image. A distant light. As bright as a sun and just as soft. Β It almost pulses deep from within Azathoth as though beconing. But is it further in or the only way out of the creature. An eye that seems to open to yet further possibilities that seem impossible in are state as a helpless dreamer. In the original fragment of Azathoth, it told the story of a man who left this world to go into his dreams. To discover something seemingly impossible. This than leads into what might have been the true resolution of the story. He left one collective of ignorant dreamers to become the ultimate dreamer. But in discovering the zenith of his abilities. To be the true Howard Philips Lovecraft he became unstable and became his own mad form of infinity. This than leads to Randolph Carter, an avatar of Lovecraft on a similar journey, starting his journey with the discovery of something hidden in a cemetery and in a mausoleum, only to go on a journey to find the frozen Kadath, acquire the silver key, and be given purpose by Yog-Sothoth himself before given new flesh to dream in. But does that mean that he too will journey into Azathoth, to break from the fullness of Azathoth to discover his own massive infinity. Questions seemingly farce, but all possible in that one light beyond the hideous name.

This was a great image and I'm happy to comment on it. Sorry if it may have gotten a little too allegorical, but with a creature like Azathoth with so little information its a fertile ground for new perceptions.

Thanks for the enjoyable read, I enjoyed reading the journey you took with my painting!Β  It was a big discovery for me to start depicting these gods and other epic beings as landscapes and not portraits.Β  Showing the whole of the entity certainly does limit our imagination, but if we're simple seeing a portion then it is up to the viewer to decide just how unlimited the size might be.Β  This may have started with my Yog Sothoth illustration, I was listening to evocative music and it pushed my imagination to a new approach.

And I'm glad you did. You seemed to approach closer to what the true Azathoth is when you chose to see it in such a way. Not s simply described being but an embodiment of the land we live and dream in.

Really happy to comment and glad it's helping in someway

The idiot flutist always accompanies Azathoth if Azathoth is summoned (by a madman or fool ! Nothing can be gained by summoning Azathoth. In one version of the Necronomicon that I have, the Mad Arab wisely omitted Azathoth's sigil.)
