Description:
A shoulder-fired directed-energy weapon Developed as part of Variable Kinetics’ push toward experimental infantry-scale energy weapons, the Supernova combines electromagnetic acceleration systems with compact fusion-based plasma generation technology, producing destructive yields once reserved for vehicle-mounted weapons.
The weapon fires massive incandescent plasma bolts generated from disposable 30mm XM89 “Nova” fusion cells. Upon discharge, the plasma mass is accelerated and magnetically shaped before leaving the barrel as a blazing orange projectile surrounded by expanding ionization and thermal distortion. Impacts are catastrophic. Heavy armor is breached outright, while softer targets are typically…vaporized (and that’s putting it nicely) within the immediate impact zone. Even near misses are dangerous; the resulting pressure shockwave and thermal bloom can rupture organs, ignite flammable materials, and yeet infantry off their feet.
The weapon is carried over the shoulder and fired from a stabilized forward grip arrangement. Its enormous reinforced barrel dominates the profile, ending in multiple segmented thermal vent arrays designed to dump excess heat after firing.
The side-mounted ammunition system loads five XM89 fusion cells into a reinforced cassette positioned behind the operator’s head when shouldered. This unusual arrangement actually keeps the weapon’s center of gravity close to the body while leaving room for the enormous acceleration chamber running the length of the barrel. Loading can be awkward for inexperienced operators, though.
One of the Supernova’s defining characteristics is its variable projectile acceleration system. Unlike conventional plasma weapons with fixed discharge velocities, the Supernova allows the user to dynamically alter the behavior of each shot depending on tactical requirements.
In Arc Mode, the plasma bolt is launched at comparatively low velocity, causing it to travel in a slow, visible ballistic arc similar to say, a grenade launcher round. This mode is primarily used for indirect fire and attacking enemies behind cover. Because the bolt remains coherent longer at lower acceleration, the resulting impact produces an especially large thermal bloom and explosion.
In Direct-Fire Mode, the weapon functions as a true high-velocity plasma cannon. The bolt is accelerated to hypersonic speeds exceeding 3,600 meters per second, producing an almost instantaneous line-of-sight strike. Upon impact, armor flashes into slag, and the surrounding air detonates outward in a violent shockwave.
The most curious setting is Tracker Mode. In this configuration, the plasma bolt is deliberately slowed and wrapped within a semi-stable electromagnetic guidance envelope. Using the Supernova’s onboard targeting systems, the projectile can lock onto the electromagnetic signature of vehicles and subtly correct its trajectory in flight. While slower and less destructive than Direct-Fire mode, Tracker shots are extremely difficult to evade once locked.
The Supernova includes a targeting package centered around a 3-6× multi-spectrum thermal optic. The sight incorporates automatic rangefinding, ballistic prediction, and SmartLink compatibility with helmets, visors, and neural implants. Cybernetically users can effectively “slave” the weapon to their visual tracking systems.
Despite its power, the Supernova is notoriously …temperamental and a bit of a bitch to deal with. All firing modes support optional Overcharge Mode, in which additional energy is dumped into the fusion reaction and acceleration coils to dramatically increase destructive output. Overcharged shots can annihilate armored vehicles in a single strike or obliterate fortifications, but the process pushes the weapon beyond safe operating tolerances. Coil failure, containment rupture, or catastrophic feedback can cause the weapon itself to detonate violently, often killing the operator instantly.
It is highly popular amongst Yaegirs. Many clones of it exist on the galactic market.
