Ivy — Description

Ivy never went to college after high school. First of all, her parents didn’t have much money to send her anywhere, especially with how much they had to spend on her doctor’s appointments and medical supplies. But on top of that, she never really enjoyed school anyways. She was always pushed to the sidelines, anyone who might be interested in getting to know her, pushed away by caretakers and aids that insisted she needed her space.
It didn’t matter that she she use text to speech using the eye gaze attachment on her tablet, No one really took her seriously. Her older sister was the only one in her family that really treated her like her age growing up, her parents, teachers, other students treating her as if she was a child, way into high school. She didn’t blame the other students, after all the adults around her should have known better.
But whenever it was just her and her sister, she felt normal. They went shopping, went to horror movies, did normal things. So of course when she moved away to college during her Sophomore year of high school she felt lost and alone again. No one took her seriously again, and her parents’ constant supervision prevented her from looking for any jobs to escape.
She did her best to keep in touch, and once her sister had gotten a full time job at the corporate office of a growing marketing company, she knew she had a way out of her old life.
Her sister was quickly able to find her a job on the company’s IT help desk. She didn’t need to answer phones, and her research on computers as well as high school courses already gave her enough experience to troubleshoot basic problems. Chat based, and email support, as well as remote computer control worked perfectly for her situation, and in most cases, the customer didn’t even need to know the person they were talking to was in a wheelchair.
It finally gave the 20 year old a chance to feel normal. It did take a while for the two of them to convince their parents she was able to have a job of her own and move in with her sister out of state, but once they were able to, she never looked back.
