Model is the amazing Kat-Sui. Dress by Moresca.Working on shooting with her was lots of fun. I had my own idea of "what works" in the camera and she had very strong ideas of "what is correct" in terms of dance. So we had a lot of back and forth between "looks good to me!" and "nope, it needs to be a hair different over here..." There are aspects of the dance poses that I don't pretend to even understand, as far as her toes being correctly aligned or whatnot. No matter - I had a great time shooting these.

Yep. My first purchase with them was one of their wool blend great cloaks. I still have it over 10 years later, it's only had 1 hole in it that I repaired and never had another problem since. They are totally awesome!

Shooting really skilled dancers is pretty easy. They spend their whole lives, basically, trying to figure out how to look cool.

thanks, i recently had a photo-shoot with a ballerina, the same experience, of what looks good and the correct pose. we did both, and we were both happy. TY for sharing your exp.

Dance is a discipline of a high order. It may look free form and spontaneous, but it's only after mastering all the rules. I know a few dancers and they are amazing athletes. They take their craft seriously.

Yeah, Kat's a perfectionist. And she's damn good. It was interesting since I really had no idea what worked and didn't - she was very cool about it, though. After a couple jumps barefoot, she said "my feet are not going to be able to take more of this" - a great deal of body awareness.. I suppose that stands to reason. I, of course, was just worried about the light and composition.

When I taught drawing, it was my duty to hire models. Always hired dancers because they were keenly aware of their body in space. Made sessions lively. Dancers are great.

The image is the way I want it; I'm not sure I'd be willing to do any "tweaks" unless you can suggest something that will substantially improve the image.

Visualy, the composition has something intriging. I think it's the balance of the balance of the skirt in one side and of the void in the other side, with the eyes going in the same way of the hands. It reminds me of a spiral.
