Description “Zu! Hey, Zu, where are you?”

Kirlia had his hands cupped around his mouth as he walked around the Daycare, calling out for the little Zorua. It had been a little more than two weeks since the day she had hatched, and things were not going as well as he and Missy had hoped,

It wasn’t until after she hatched that he found out that her egg had not been given to the Daycare like he had thought. Instead her parents left her there very often - because of a busy schedule, Missy said - and she simply ended up hatching there. Her parents returned to pick her up that very day, but even after being hatched, he noticed them still dropping her off very often. He had disliked how they didn’t spend that much time with her, but he knew he had to at least appreciate that she still had her parents.

But then…her mother became ill…and….

She died. And then her Father left.; he left his daughter at the Daycare and never returned.

Since that day, the playful Zorua he once knew changed drastically. She started to act up, misbehaving and pulling pranks at a harmful level whenever she could. But most of all, she acted her worse around adopters. If even one found some interest in her, she would pull a prank or talk back until she drove them out of the Daycare, or she would tell them that she was “not up for adoption”.

Today, in particular, things took a turn for the worse. Kirlia huffed as he remembered the event clearly.

Some pompous Golduck walked in, looking to adopt, and Missy led her over to the children. The moment she saw Zu, she “fell in love” and tried to pick her up. Zu, however, immediately moved out of the way, snapping at her not to touch her, and the two got into an argument. Missy tried to encourage the Zorua to try to give the woman a chance, and as the frustrated Golduck continued to try to get her hands on her, Kirlia clearly heard her tell Zu through gritted teeth to stop acting like a brat and to act like a civilized child.

And just when she was close to picking her up? Zu hit her. She swiped at her hand.

Afterwards, the young child finally shouted at her, telling her to get away from her and calling her an ugly lady, to which the Golduck gasped, appalled by such a "false insult", and pulled away with a look of disgust on her face.

Missy tried to stop her from leaving to apologize, but the Golduck spun around, infuriated, and said a terrible thing. Something that made Kirlia scowl now, remembering:

“Missy, you need to fix that…thing‘s behavior!” she had shot a finger at Zu, glaring at her. “With an attitude like that, no one will want a child like her!”

She then turned back around, but not before making one more, nasty comment.

“Hmph…! What kind of children are you even raising here, anyway…?!” And with that, she lifted her beak high in the air and strutted away.

Kirlia had bristled when he had heard her insult both Zu and the children, and he couldn’t stop the anger inside from reaching the surface. He felt his own aura change, and he swore… he was so close to thunderbolting her ass out of that door, but Missy managed to notice the change as he began to walk towards the Golduck, enraged, and held him back.

Even now, he was pretty unhappy that he wasn’t able to give her a piece of his mind, but he sighed, knowing that all he could do now was hope that she would never show her face again. Though, he was pretty sure that after the day’s events, she wouldn’t.

After everything was said and done, Zu had run off. And now, he was trying to search for her.

Dang it…where did she go…?

Walking down a hallway he started to pass the door to the naptime room, except he stopped, the fact that it was ever so slightly open processing in his mind. He took a few steps back and peered in through the small space in the door. Just as he had guessed, the little Zorua was inside, alone, sitting on the cushioned bench in front of the closed window on the other side of the room and staring out into the outside world.

Without hesitating, he calmly but quietly opened the door the rest of the way and stepped in before closing it behind him. She twitched, hearing the click of the door, but stayed where she was. Instead, she tensed slightly, almost like she was bracing herself.

“I’m not angry, y’know. I just came to see how you were.”

At this she relaxed a bit, yet he could still tell that something was wrong. He continued to cross the room, and once he reached her he sat down, resting an elbow on the window sill.  She still didn’t turn to him, but now he could see her face. And he frowned, seeing her stare outside with half-lidded, saddened light blue eyes

And so, he broke the silence.

“Don’t listen to what that idiot said…and, well, she totally had that coming, with how she acted and all.”

Things were silent for a few moments more. Then finally, the Zorua opened her mouth.

“Kilia…” she said softly, catching his attention, and the corner of his mouth twitched. She never could pronounce his name right, but he didn’t mind. It was a new nickname for him now. One that only she called him.

“Yes, Zu?”

She still refused to turn towards him, but he watched her as she bit her lip and slightly lowered her head, letting out a heavy, shaky sigh before continuing.

“Why…why did Dad leave me behind…?”

As she finally turned her head slightly towards him, her blue innocent eyes staring right into his, he felt a pain rise up inside hearing this question. He had been prepared for this, and he could feel just how confused and upset she was. But he had to answer honestly.

“Sometimes….parents just can’t take care of their kids anymore. And because of that, they have to leave them at the Daycare.”

He knew that she had been in denial and had held onto the hope that her father would return to her. He knew that she acted up and drove the adopters away only so she would still be there when her father returned. It was obvious.
Many knew that she was waiting for her father, at least, but they didn’t have the guts to tell the child that he probably would never return. But…there was no way he was going to feed her empty lies and give her false hope.

Even so, her reaction didn’t fail to pain him.

“Does…does that mean…he’s never coming back…?”

She turned her body fully towards him now and stared up at him with sorrowful eyes, and he could see them begin to brim with up. He clearly heard the anguish in her voice, and at this point, he knew she felt absolutely hopeless, not even bothering to hold her pain back. She was only a child, after all. Things like this were hard to accept and understand.

He was never good with words; he wasn’t like his other self in that sense. So…he did one other thing instead.

Reaching out, he carefully picked Zu up by the forearms and pulled her close, embracing her.

“In all honesty, Zu…I don’t know.”
He actually had a feeling inside…but there was no way he was going to hurt her even more. Even he wasn’t that blunt. “But y’know…” He loosened his hold on her, so he could look down at her and grin. “You still have me.”

She stared at him, a little surprised by his response, but smiled softly.

“Yeah…I guess I do…”

“ You don’t guess. You know. And besides…“ He lightly smirked. “Your Dad is missing out on hanging out with an awesome kid like you.”

With that, he reached over and ruffled the fur on her head. To his relief, Zu snickered at the action and playfully swiped at his hand.

“Hey! Who said you could do that?”

“Says me, of course. I can do that whenever I want. I’m the oldest after all. Would you rather…I don’t know…have me tickle you?” He raised an eyebrow, and when her eyes grew wide and she actually pulled away from his arms to keep a distance, he chuckled. “Yeeep. That’s what I thought.”

Zu paused for a few seconds, but soon smirked. Climbing up on his arm, she jumped onto the top of his head and plopped down on it.

“Well here!” She took her paws and began to rub at his head, messing with his hair. “Looks like I can do it too! So I guess we’re even.”

He laughed. “Heh, I guess we are!” Standing up and balancing Zu on his head, he looked up to peer at her. “How about we go back and get something to eat? I think Missy is taking the others outside right now…so we can go have our own little snack time together. What do you say?”

She leaned over his head, careful to keep her balance, and gave him an excited look.

“As long as I get to have some chocolate milk, then yes!

“Your favorite, right? Heh, sure. Let’s go then~” Kirlia walked on, exiting the room and eventually he walked down the hallway and towards the main room. Things were silent, but after a while, Zu spoke up.

“Hey Kilia…?

“Hmm?”

“…thanks…”

He smiled to himself.

“Hey Zu?”

The fox leaned over again to look into his face. “Huh?”

Smirking, he reached up and lightly poked her on the nose, causing her to pull back a bit in surprise.

“There’s no need to thank me. I think we have some sort of special bond going on. Just remember that if you ever need me, I’ll be here, kay?”

At first she blinked…but then a bright, shy smile crept up on her muzzle.

“Okay…but…

Thank you, anyway…for always being there for me.”
