Description
Okidoke! Here's my tutorial. asked for it awhile ago,but I forgot to make it So here it finally is. Kinda long, HUGE file. If you printed it out, you'd need a 10 by 80 inch piece of paper >.> It might take awhile to load. But it's got lots of information, very in-depth, step by step pictures, random side notes. The sprite I'm using in this tutorial is custom for and can be found here if you want to further admire it. [link]
Lemme know what you think, if you need help, find a typo, or ya just want to chat!
Hmph, the little sprite at the bottom was going to be animated, but DA's being a jerk and won't let me submit it to the tutorial category if it's a GIF
Blame DA for this tutorial's lack of awesomeness!
*EDIT* It should be noted that in 2.8, if you have your layers in a folder, they will not animate. It can get very frustrating if you don't know what's causing it. So you either have to deal with them being all over the place, or take them out of the folder one by one every time you want to preview your animation.

Which version are you using? Also, are your frames in a folder? I've found that it doesn't register the layer in playback if you have them in a folder.

I'm not sure if this woul affect it or not, but do your layers have alpha channels? Are they set on 'Replace' after the layer name? Is your particular problem that nothing comes up in the playback window or selecting the playback window is not an option?

Putting (replace) just like that migh affect it, but other than that I really don't know. I'm sorry, I'm not an expert :/

What seems to be the problem? Keep in mind that if you have layers in a folder, they won't show up in the animation, even if the folder is visible.

uhm this tutorial helped a lot with 2.8 buuut i am having some issues with uploading it to DA. when ever i try to upload it here it says preview image needed. any advice you can give me that would help me fix the problem or any other tutorials that may help me fix this issue?

Yea, the rules are kinda wonky when it comes to animations. Depending on how big the thing is that you're submitting, you need a preview. If it's fairly small (less than 100x100 I think?)it should be fine, and you might just be in the wrong category. If it's bigger than that, you can save one frame of your animation as a .jpg (black/white background instead of transparent) or .png(transparent background). Really, just anything that's not animated can be used as a preview, I think.

They're pretty good for being new to animating? Did you draw all the frames yourself? I've found that that's the hardest part.

Just add .xcf to the end. It's the same as if you were to save it as a .jpg or something.
To finish, optimize for gif and save it as a gif. It's all there, are you even reading it? >.<

Well, I'm not 100% sure what you mean by that, but if you save it as an .xcf, it'll be saved exactly the way you already have it, no compression or weirdness or anything.
And don't worry. I've had a couple years of practice with Gimp. I had to figure it all out myself too. At least you've got someone as awesome as me to help out

An already animated sprite already has all of it's layers, so just open up the one file. If your layers box goes missing, you ca either go to Windows> Recently closed Docks> Layers, Channels, Paths, blahblahblah and that will bring up the normal window, or you can go to Windows> Dockable Dialogs> Layers for just the layers window.

Well, if you want to separate all the layers out, I would say that the fastest and easiest way to do that would be to turn off all the layers other than the one you want as it's own image and save it as a compressed image, like a png or jpg. I would suggest jpg if you want to take it into paint. Then turn that layer off and turn the next one on and save it the same way. Keep doing that until you have them all as their own files.
That's if you want to do it that way. You can edit at the pixel level in Gimp though. It would be way easier to just mess with it in gimp instead of saving all the separate layers, opening them in paint to edit them, then opening them in gimp again to animate them.

Wait, you can fave comments!?!
There's little picture of an eyeball right next to every layer. Click that to turn it off (I don't have it open, so I can't tell you exactly where it is )

Merge is what'd you'd want if you're trying to get each frame to be it's own image.
