Description
In a flashback in "Of Solitude and Self", their relationship is implied to involve discretion and mutual respect: Summer trusted Raven enough to know the full scope of their mission and accompany her. In turn, Raven commended her for her ability to be a mother, which she claimed "she was better at", even broaching the subject of her leaving behind her family. The fallout of the mission however, was enough for Raven to later attack Summer’s daughter Ruby for sounding just like her in a negative connotation. It's heavily implied that Raven was the only person that knew what really happened to Summer during her final mission.

Flashback sequence In RWBY comics, Raven, whilst in her corvid form, tells a young Ruby that Summer is not and could never be Yang's mother, calling both Summer and Ruby weak. She also states the stories Yang told Ruby about Summer were lies. Ruby did not recognize this as Raven, and assumed it was a Grimm mocking her... Until now...
Ruby Rose: don't you dare talk about my mother like that her death is your blood on your hands I'm gonna say this once DID YOU DO IT!?!!

During their last mission... Summer Rose was murdered by Salem's most intelligent Grimm, the Hound... Which Salem planned to set for Summer, to rid of Ozpin's Silver-Eyed Warrior... Since then, Raven was driven by guilt beneath her soul, survivor's guilt to say... Right after, her former teammate, Kali Belladonna also died due to assassination secretly arranged by Sienna Klan... That guilt is what made her fall back to her old ways even more...
