Description
Turboverse RWBY Volume 9 serves as an expansive crossover between the RWBY alternate universe and the 2009 Tim Burton-produced animated film 9 (Nine), alongside prominent appearances from The Doctor (specifically the Ninth and Second incarnations).
Theme: Heroism, Vengeance, and guilt (Ruby Rose)
In the Ever After, Ruby Rose faces a devastating psychological descent.
The Burden: The weight of her leadership and recent failures in Atlas takes a heavy toll, leaving her in a state of deep guilt because of her Semblance caused a devastating damage. She also dealing with the suffering and vengeance against Salem who is responsible for her mother's death which also a factor to her recent failure. Even worse part where Ruby is dealing with grief with the fact that she lost yet another family member, and this time was Qrow Branwen...
The Manipulator: This vulnerability is exploited by the Curious Cat, who manipulates the world of the Ever After to break her further, intending to seize either her or Neo's body to escape into Remnant.
The Breakdown & Winter conflict
Winter Schnee confronts Ruby about her weight of her leadership and her focus on revenge against Salem nearly caused the danger of not just Atlas but the four kingdoms because of Ruby 's Air Semblance went haywire, when Yang tries to confront Ruby and to bring balance between the two, Ruby ran away out of guilt for what she caused which left her in the open to Curious Cat to drive her guilt even further.
Meeting between Bloodlines...
Instead of encountering a cryptic vision from the Blacksmith, Ruby is granted a genuine, emotional reunion with her mother, Summer Rose and her Uncle Qrow. Summer comforts her daughter, sharing her own past struggles as a Huntress to help Ruby understand that it is okay to make mistakes and experience doubt. Hell even Qrow every time. Summer and Qrow wasn't the only one though for the past Warriors from past generation even her own Bloodline confronts her with their own hardships and mistakes. Qrow convince Ruby to let go of her hate and revenge for it revenge symbolize a poison that will consume anyone and unpredictively destroy anything and everyone.
The Rebirth of Ruby Rose: Ruby regenerates
In the Turboverse, the climax of RWBY Volume 9 is reimagined through the concept of Regeneration, a narrative mechanic heavily inspired by Doctor Who. Unlike the original series' "Ascension," which often results in a complete personality or identity shift, Ruby’s Regeneration acts as a physical and spiritual cleanse
of her negative emotions to be free but keeping her core identity intact.
The Choice: When offered the chance by The Tree to start over as someone else (like a peaceful mouse or a storyteller), Ruby chooses to return as herself, accepting the hardships of her life because of the people she relies on.
Physical Change: Ruby emerges with a new design, including a hairstyle that blends her short look with her longer Volume 3 style.
The "Fantastic" State: Ruby adopts the Ninth Doctor’s catchphrase, "Fantastic!", signaling a new mental state free from the narrow desire for revenge or the crushing weight of her past failures.
Enhanced Lore and Powers
This transformation serves as a significant power-up for the Turboverse storyline:
Mastery over the Wolf: She can now access her Werewolf transformation without the usual pain and has superior control over her Silver-Eyed powers.
The Hunt for Cinder: This "Fantastic" state is essential for her role in the Spider-Man Clone Mania or Turbo Steel crossover, where she leads the hunt against a resurrected, Grimm hybrid version of Cinder Fall.
The Doctor as a Witness
A unique element of this AU is the presence of The Doctor (specifically the Second and Ninth incarnations) as multiversal observers.
The Second Doctor is portrayed as being shocked by the event, as seeing a non-Time Lord undergo a literal "Regeneration" is scientifically startling.
The Ninth Doctor acts as a spiritual mentor, described as being truly proud of Ruby for choosing to move forward after her own "war."
Butterfly
The Turboverse pushes forward with "The Butterfly Metaphor." It depicts a physical and spiritual evolution where Ruby becomes a more powerful version of herself, gaining mastery over her Werewolf transformation and Silver-Eyed powers.
Narrative & Origin
The piece details the origins of Ruby Rose, with a darker, more visceral focus on her psychological state and the manifestation of her powers
In the Turboverse, The Awaking refers to the manifestation stage of a Semblance, which is reimagined as an untapped power of the human soul triggered by psychological or physical trauma. Unlike the original series, these powers act as a biological defense mechanism or immune system for the mind and body.
Here is how the members of Ruby experienced her Awaking in this AU:
Ruby Rose (Air Manipulation): Awakened at age 7 following the loss of her mother. While being pursued by The Hound when Ruby was going to visit her grandmother's house (The Hound is reimagined as a Volume 1 era threat), her grief and desire for vengeance triggered a tornado-level wind power that drove the creature away. Since Ruby is based upon Little Red Ridding Hood, and the Hound is based upon the Big Bad Wolf, recalling to the original source material.
Physical Manifestation: The sensation of her power awakening is described as her whole body and soul was about to be blown away by strong currents of wind and she's was struggling to breath from her lungs.
The Family Dynamics: The story dives heavily into the Rose-Xiao Long household's grief. Because Ruby grew incredibly close to Summer before her disappearance, she takes the loss hard! Meanwhile, a young Yang Xiao Long focuses her energy on intense melee combat training and fire manipulation.
Ruby's motivations...
By the time of Turboverse RWBY Volume 1, Ruby joins Beacon Academy at 17 years old rather than 15. Her motivation is driven by a desire to avenge her mother, who fell victim to Grimm when Ruby was only 6.
Since than crossing with The Hound grew Ruby's hatred for the Grimm for removing the one person in her life that mattered so much to her. Turboverse Ruby Rose carries a matured, serious exterior driven by a deep-seated hatred for the Grimm, whom she views strictly as mindless animals that don't understand love, empathy, and beauty. All they understand is chaos, death, and destruction because its in their nature... A nature that stole the most important person in her life.
Growing Up: Ruby reflects on the day her mother disappeared, acknowledging that while she still holds onto her signature innocence, she is no longer ignorant of the harsh realities of the world.
Moving Forward: She expresses a bittersweet wish to return to the simpler days spent with Yang, Uncle Qrow, and her mother, but firmly resolves that she can no longer hang onto the past.
The Ultimate Vow: The monologue concludes with a fierce promise to her mother's spirit. Ruby vows that once she uncovers the ultimate source of all the Grimm plaguing Remnant, whoever is responsible will pay dearly, declaring: "They will know the name, Ruby Rose... I won't let you down..."
Despite the fact Ruby in this AU is 17 years old, with a more matured but serious exterior as the leader of Team RWBY... But the interior still captures her signature hyperactive, childish antics. Antics that plays a factor in Weiss's mounting frustration later down the line.
