In Coming Home
There, a place and time
Flying Dragons roared and
spat Fire and Brimstone. There
Dragonflies flit and plucked up
Torn and crispy critters, bore them to
my station, where
My charge: put Humpty together again.
And feeling their whirling wings
slap slap slap
slap slap
Upon my head and shoulders,
I'd rise and
cry
Incoming!
“It's true, you don't hear
the one that hits you,” said
Gunny, stretched prone with
bandaged, bleeding Pride.
“What really hurts?
I didn't dive when someone
cried
Incoming!”
Here that place and time
Is gone a score and
more of years; yet
My charge remains. Here
Midst mayhem’s storming she
turns to clear Fury’s field
Flinging sanguineous sponges, and
Seeing me too near,
cries
Incoming!
