The other half of the reason is a detailed, entirely-sensible-by-in-universe-logic explanation that he acquired through his extensive experience but that he skimps out of describing because "fighting spirit" sounds better.

Rakan ignores all the laws of magic (and physics, given he can throw a giant sword at Mach+ speeds and then surf on it). It's not even just that simple, though, as Negi reveals him to actually be quite smart -- he's responsible for finding the weakness inherent in 'Raiten Taisou.'

Word of God says Kamina is actually a Badass Normal, having the least amount of Spiral energy in the show. What makes Kamina great is his ability to increase others Spiral energy by giving rousing speeches.
