Ah yesssss this scene was just so perfect-- this is one of my favorite Vetinari books for sure I'm so glad he got his own little adventure!

I feel like Vetinari's default look is always something between smug and terrifying

I think his default expression is "I'm surrounded by idiots/mildly harassed constantly/stop wasting my godsdamned time," and his expression here is "I'm surrounded by idiots, but I SO just won!" *chuckles*

He needed his own adventure, and us fan-girls (and guys) needed to see him out of the Office.  Which was great, because him dealing with Nobby and Colon (especially after Men At Arms) was just so perfect...and all of the little facts about him you learned in that one book cemented my adoration of the complexity and awesomeness of his character.
Because seriously, plucking that bolt epitomizes what he does every day in Ankh-Morpork...takes the weapons from one group and drops it on the ground, and kicks it under a cabinet so no one gets it.  And so the world runs smoothly, if tensely.  Which is perfectly captured here with my own interpretation.
This is one of my favorite books...This, and Night Watch are possibly my two favorite books of the series, followed closely by Feet of Clay (though I have to stop reading every time I get to the part he collapses...just no...), and that makes any good art about this book some of my favorite.

Nightwatch and Jingo are probably my favorites too-- although I love Men at Arms as well because Detritus and Cuddy are amazing and their side story in that book is one of my favs.

That's a good way to put it, about Vetinari and his role in the city! I agree it was a perfect story for him-- not to mention it was a nice bit of fun with Nobby and Colon.

Men at Arms WAS amazing, but it just didn't quite capture the feel of the later Watch books or even Guards! Guards!  It needed to happen, and I loved the book immensely, but it was a book that wasn't the same as Feet of Clay, or Night Watch in the feel of it.  Night Watch was grittier than  any of the others before or after it, but it still had the essential feel to it, a feel men At Arms lacked.  Even though I agree, Detritus and Cuddy's story made me want to cry so badly from a mixture of how sweet it was and how painful it was.

*chuckles* I feel like every time you see Vetinari in the books, he's thinking Scar's line from the Lion King, the "I'm surrounded by idiots!" line.  And then he intentionally lets people see it just to mess with them.
And he is basically a peaceful man...admittedly, it's peace through a fear of a reputation he managed to forge without actually doing anything.  And I think he gets serious kicks out of messing with Colon and Nobby...particularly Colon, because I mean...in Jingo and Men At Arms, he totally enjoys the mind-games with Colon, who can't evens tumble after him.

yeah it took Pratchett a while to really get into the swing of things. Can't blame him for that!

Ahaha I think you're right. I think Vetinari enjoys his role, even if it is frustrating.

Well, Guards! Guards! had the feel I found in the alter books (it took me forever to get a copy of Men At Arms, so I read it after I read Feet of Clay and Jingo), but I agree.  It took him a long while.  I started with Soul Music, and then ended up reading Sourcery, and they had totally different feels.  Partly because at about Sourcery he sort of revamped his style, and I liked all the books after that one so much better.

He gets his kicks, definitely.  Though how appropriate it is at the time can be debated.  But the man certainly does enjoy it most of the time...as the Moist books prove, I think.  But he is also easily amused.  In every book, he's easily amused...he just tends to go poker-faced when he's amused, except in the Moist books, where he uses his amusement to mess with Moist's brain and just...make more amusement for himself, honestly.  What a man.
