I am curious if you agree with Agnes Martin's description of the process: "The worst thing you can think about when youβre working is yourself."? I find that art is a means to understand myself, describe the inside of me to the other inside of me.

Yes I agree with that as regards getting in the way of the process. The creation of something(at least something like my paintings)must have a freedom of its own almost but not quite detached from the experience of being the one creating it. At least that is true of my work and the way I have always thought about it. It is a way to understand ones self by allowing that freedom. The paintings are eventually not so much about me but more about themselves...this because when somebody else looks at the work I would hope that they would strike an emotive relationship with it and then that this reflects something of who they are, much more than they are thinking about me at least. That's the goal, I guess, well one of them, as to the reason to make paintings. For this to happen follows your quote as you have to be the vehicle by which the creativity happens but still get out of the way of the painting for it to have it's own presence, life...hmm, which is part of the 'Art' of making them...as much as the ability to have technique is the "ability" to let it happen. Is this what you meant? Strange day, if my writing is fragmented I apologise...language tends to fail when you get right in there talking about this stuff anyway...if it could be written it would be poetry, not visual, right?
You have gotten me thinking about something I haven't considered for about ten years...might even nudge me to paint something, maybe. hah probably not, not right now, but still, thanks for asking.

Klimt brought the idea home for me with his use of symbols to evoke a participation. One of my goals this year is to get to NYC to the Niele gallery to see his work and that of Kokoschka.
It is interesting that you mention poetry. I am reading Owen Banfield's "Poetic Diction", (I am a poet.) where he talks about how language is a poor symbol, usually, for what it wishes to create.

this one seems so very carefully rendered-yet-also feels intensely raw and forced out by some storm.
the others also have this feel-but some have it more than others. this is one. (in my way of seeing anyway)

The hills with the ladder remind me of the Hopi Indians living in the Adobe cliffs & the Worship of the Sun by the ancients.
