Description
Characters who appeared in a dream I had a couple nights ago. They were changelings, but from a species of monsters instead of fairies. I wish there was a way to invite them back into future dreams.
There was an orphanage in a mansion-like building beside a frozen lake in wintertime. It was night and there was snow on the ground. A changeling climbed into a window where some boys around 8 years old were sleeping. He was shorter and thinner than the average man, naked, and had gray skin. His arms were very long and his legs were short, so he moved in an ape-like way. He had pointed ears, a long pointy nose, and sharp teeth. He also had a short tail, which was the best way to identify a changeling in human form.
The changeling was searching for another member of his species among the sleeping boys. He discovered they were all changelings whose tails had been cut off, which made them human. All but one- a boy who was pretending to be asleep. The changeling boy leapt out of bed and transformed into a dark, roughly humanoid mass of tentacles. His face was distorted with a large mouth, but still recognizably human. The adult seemed frightened, which was understandable since the boy’s other form was larger than his. He leapt out the window and the boy followed, chasing him across the snow.
The adult now ran on all fours and seemed to be having fun. He went onto the frozen lake and the boy kept chasing, making inhuman, angry sounds. He stopped suddenly when he almost ran into some men who were out cutting ice blocks. The boy also stopped and transformed back to his human appearance when he made eye contact with the men. The boy ran back toward the orphanage, now all scared child and unable or unwilling to resume his monstrous form. The men were shouting, and one grabbed a weapon and started chasing the boy on a horse.
The adult changeling ran in front of the boy and stopped him. “Why are you running?” he said. “You can destroy them!"
The boy pushed past him and ran to the orphanage, where he stood frozen in fear under the window he could not climb up to.
The adult didn’t want a fight, so he stamped a foot on the ice and sent a crack shooting under the horse’s hooves. The horse fell into the lake but the man jumped off and tried to help it out. The rest of the men caught up, and some were already running past waving weapons.
The adult went to the boy and told him it was hopeless to stay because he would be killed. Though the boy didn’t want to leave his friends, he agreed and followed the adult into a dense forest.
Chao vs. the Fish-ThingsLiu Chao stepped through the portal, left the cold wind behind, and found himself on a beach. The sky was deep twilight blue, but the breeze ruffling his greasy hair was still warm. Clumps of snow clinging to his coat commenced melting. Distant voices rose over the gentle crash of waves. He could make out two figures and a fire near the water’s edge. The scent of fragrant smoke and cooking meat made his empty stomach roar to life.
Chao prodded the sand with his cane and frowned. “I appreciate you sending me someplace warm this time,” he said, “but could you have let me out at the bottom? You did this because I called you a space lizard, didn’t you?”
A low, joyful sound rose out of the wind and vacillated in and out of hearing. Though the Portal Maker did not communicate using human language, Chao had learned to recognize the entity’s laughter. Despite his great and unknowable power, he seemed at times to possess a rather human sense of humor.

I love dreams like that, they are special. I'm glad you illustrated and shared this!
Do you have recurring dreams or dreams that seem to be set in the same places? It happens to me sometimes so there's hope you'll meet these characters again.

Thanks.
I rarely see anything specific carry over from one dream to later ones. I do sometimes have repeating themes, such as not looking like myself and living in an unfamiliar house.

Yeah, it's too bad you can't order sequels.

I've had dream sequels before, but I had to wait a few months. Maybe that'll happen to you!
