because STAR WARS.Honestly, i'm an EU baby from way back, starting with the Thrawn (then)trilogy, so i have... misgivings... about VII+, and wiping the VERY DEVELOPED POST-ROTG "VERSE out (and apparently not even based on Lucas' plans/scripts).....
I hope it's at least good and fun... (not gonna get to see it for a while)

That's interesting that you STARTED with the expanded universe novels. I can definitely see why you would hold dear to them, BUT since this is covering a time period when all the original cast is much older, I like to think some of those stories could still be canon (even though the old expanded universe isn't officially canon after Lucas removed them, right?).

Phil, I didn't say I started being a fan with the books, but that I started into the EU with Heir to the Empire (the first book in the Thrawn trilogy) and was probably the first novel I read on my own, and kick-started my bibliophilia as well as generating an interest in the further SW adventures. For me, there has always been Star Wars (and Star Trek). Dad was a fan of both -which is probably why we had Heir in the house in the first place, for a year or two before I actually read it- and we had the tapes as far back as I remember...
Since the bulk of the novels at least are set after Return of the Jedi, and consist largely of: the disposition of the Empire and the Alliance rebuilding the Republic (and re-rebuilding after the Vong War); the development and forming of Han and Leia's family; and Luke's rebuilding the Jedi Order (and eventually marrying and having a son named Ben) into a sustained thing, DESPITE attempts to destroy it... so only very minor, non-important outings that have no relevance to any larger plot could count towards the "new canon". Or things from the Old Republic era, maybe, like Tales of the Jedi, or the KOTOR games/TOR MMO,... but again, I'd feel like Disney was doing a hack-job if I recognized anything...
And as to Lucas saying the EU wasn't canon... what he actually said was that they "weren't relevant to what I'm working on right now" which, at the time, was still the Prequel trilogy, and the EU had a rather large gap covering that era, presumably for that very purpose. he had a direct hand in a lot of things in the EU, like the New Jedi Order series, so...

Oh my bad, I misread, though, I didn't put it past you to be introduced to Star Wars through a book. So rather than Lucas being responsible for outcasting the EU, Disney is responsible, to some degree or another? Interesting. I don't mind your long rant comments, maybe it's due to how much time passes before you actually respond haha, it's like uncovering a treasure chest in the attic.
