I think he is much more of an anti-hero (Or an actual hero, depends on how you see things! My setting is certainly not a standard one. 
Anyway, he is not going to places and doing things but rather living in some distant parts and teaching the further generation - he's a sage after all.

I can just imagine this guy in an RPG of sorts, where he would offer some of the best blighting weapons in the game, but you have to get through his "funhouse" first, which involves, like, ALL OF THE TRAPS.
