Fed up with the rangers and their continuous meddling with his plans, Lord Zedd takes advantage of Rito Revolto's visit and his gifts (the Tengus), lending him control of the still not fully powered Serpenterra and with the Tengus as backup he sends Rito to attack the Rangers, destroying their zords and their powers.

Zordon sends the Rangers in search of Ninjor the one who helped him creating the power coins when he first came to Earth to have him restore their powers. Ninjor reluctantly agrees to give them new powers instead, using the Ninjetti as the power source instead of power coins. But since Zordon, and the Rangers too, were so fond of "their diamonds" he added them on their suits just to please Zordon and the Rangers. Ninjor recognizes Tommy's White Ranger Powers to be a new creation from Zordon and uses them as the base of his new powers.

Noticing Earth's coalition towards a better future Billy decides to do some work of his own that would allow the NASADA, the new agency created to prepare Earth as a whole, to help them move a step forward in their goal.

After settling things with Tommy and Billy, Rocky finally accepts his role on the team instead of striving for leadership, now feeling that even Adam who tried to stop him from the beginning, would be a better leader than him.

Soon after getting their new powers Tommy confronts Zedd's New General, a clone of his created by the Wizard of Deception. After battling him several times Tommy is able to defeat him and destroy his cloned Power Coin, but since his life was tied to his powers, he dies, leaving Tommy conflicted on his actions.

A couple months after receiving their new powers, and successfully saving Kat from Rita's spell, Kimberly, much like Jason before her, gets the chance to practice with a professional coach, in her case, in gymnastics and after some struggle to decide on what to do and with the help of Katherine Hillard (who under Rita's spell tried to kill her before), she decides to follow her passion and leaves the team, leaving Kat as her replacement.

Much like Tommy before her, Kat's adjustment to the team is difficult, with most of the team hesitant to trust her since she tried to kill Kimberly just a few weeks back. Tommy helps her feel better since he passed through the same situation, and she too helps him get to terms on what happened with his clone, a connection between them begins to form.

Annoyed that his daughter had married Zedd (though Zedd basically forced her in order to "inherit" a bigger army and make his forces even bigger) and still not succeeded in destroying the rangers, not even with her brother's help, Master Vile comes to Earth in search of his true objective, the Zeo Crystal. He uses the Orb of Doom to try to destroy the Ninjetti temple, instead the Rangers protect it at the cost of loosing their powers.

With the rangers unable to battle, Zordon asks for help to the Aquitans to protect the Earth, at least until the rangers can recover the Zeo Crystal. The Aquitans arrive and help protect not only Earth but the rangers themselves as they are attacked by Vile's minions on their quest to recover the Zeo Crystals.
