Sure it is helpful, everything is. But were I to ask her to comb her hair first, I wonder how relaxed she would look? And there is smoke coming up from the cigarette if you look more closely. Hmm, there are a lot of cushion lines, I agree ... but again, it is a moment caught, to which I shall reply below ...

Ahh, but there you miss the point. It is precisely that moment that is chosen by the photographer .. that split second which personalizes his perception of the scene. In the case of living beings also, it is their reaction to the presence of the photographer that counts. Are you sure that if you had taken this shot, this young lady would have that exact expression on her face? Would she have left that leg rest against the back of the setee in that manner? Would her general demeanour and body language be the same ?

When you do your carricatures in the form of cartoons, you simulate the exact moment that you would like to find, you can do it more or less at will. We as photographers must seize and sometimes create that moment ... : -)

You always manage to to take photographs that capture the essence of emotion. How ever it is that you do this, I glad your good at what you do.

Thank you my friend, I appreciate that. If I manage occasionally to capture something, I think it is because I feel it.

Lets drop the word talent or I cannot reply .. let's just say that I am an opportunist .. I follow my models around and capture moments that touch me ... we drink, she smokes, we talk .. and I take pictures ....

Love the way the sort of chiaroscuro articulates the undulations and surface changes of her stomach. The lines of the couch's fabric echo the lines of her forms; complimentary textures (skin and couch). There's a kind of pulsing halo around the subject; as if she were solarized (this the flash?).

My first critique of your work here at DA included a mild complaint about the ash tray and the smoking subject; I've been disabused of that - it doesn't seem obtrusive here.

JohnPeri In reply to Bepep [2008-10-21 17:18:23 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. Undoubtedly, the halo is due to the flash pointing upwards (no solarisation) which is a little too strong here .. unfortunately, we started a little late and the natural light was dying down ...

This is not a photo critique my friend, it is an expression of your social views which have no pertinence here .. that being said, a photographer uses props to make a photo more interesting.

"a little fill in flash off the camera " means
- a fill from the camera flash
- or a fill from a flash that was away from the camera? thanks !

Thanks for the info !
About the photo ? I just fav'ed it, didn't I ?
Plus, I just read an interview with you, on universdartistes.com, yesterday, so I guess you could count me on your fan list
I really like the (simple) way you use light. I have a hard time creating bw images that I like. But, in time...

Ha, I appreciate all that, thank you .. but I'm really after criticism. Please do not ever hesitate to tell me when something is wrong. Someone further up just rightly pointed out that the flash is causing a dark halo to surround the body. Due to that, I wil be careful in future not to point the flash directly upwards. Best wishes my friend, John

I understand your wish for criticism, but how can I point out mistakes when I don't have one single nude shot in my gallery ? I don't think that would be fair. I think you should get critique from people on the same level with you, or higher.
Otherwise, it would be like.. let's say I make bikes for a living and one day I go to BMW and say "Hey, this car you made is ugly. The chair should be red and not black. Change it ! "
Back to you, I'll keep watching and training my eye and maybe one day I will become an inspiration for others, younger than me
All the best to you too, John !
