Description
A portrait of a Diamond Python (Morelia spilota spilota) from the Great North Museum: Hancock in Newcastle. This striking resident of the museum’s Living Planet gallery is seen here resting on a piece of driftwood, showcasing the intricate "diamond" patterns that give the species its name.
The photo highlights the python's unique sensory features, including the heat-sensing pits along its jawline, which allow it to track prey in total darkness. As one of the most iconic live exhibits at the Hancock, these snakes offered visitors a close-up look at the beauty and complexity of Australia’s coastal reptiles.
Location: Great North Museum: Hancock, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK
Species: Diamond Python (Carpet Python subspecies)
Subject: Herpetology / Museum Photography
