Carpet Python — Description

A striking close-up of a Carpet Python (Morelia spilota) at the Great North Museum: Hancock. This non-venomous predator is known for its incredible visual diversity, with patterns and colours that vary greatly between subspecies. The image captures the snake's streamlined head and heat-sensing pits along the jaw, which it uses to detect warm-blooded prey in the wild. While no longer a permanent resident, specimens like this were central to the museum's Living Planet gallery, illustrating the complex adaptations of reptiles inhabiting varied landscapes from arid interiors to humid coastal regions.
