Description I don't usually post the comics from my website here, but I felt the subject matter of this one in particular warranted a bigger audience.

For homework I want you all to familiarize yourself with these songs and the bands who played them:

Anarchy in the UK - Sex Pistols
I Wanna Be Sedated - Ramones
Holiday in Cambodia - Dead Kennedys
Six Pack - Black Flag
Should I Stay or Should I Go - The Clash
I Will Dare - The Replacements
Lake of Fire - Meat Puppets
Where is my Mind? - Pixies
Teen Age Riot - Sonic Youth
It's the End of the World as We Know It - REM
Infected - Bad Religion
Revolve - Melvins
Dirty Water - Dropkick Murphys

Spread the word! THERE IS HOPE!

I agree, but what about Green Day? or are you one of those people who think that they're not punk because they sold to a major record deal? and I've got a feeling that you also don't think that My Chemical Romance is punk either, do you?

CaptainSelection In reply to Flame-Expression [2012-07-30 00:37:35 +0000 UTC]

Green Day used to be punk, but they sold out. My Chemical Romance is not punk in the slightest. If you like them, good for you, that's your opinion and you are entitled to have it, but MCR is not punk.

i posted this a long time ago, and i now agree about MCR. and as for Green Day... i think Billie Joe will always have a little punk in him, although his music style may not be punk.

Before you speak arrogantly about other people's knowledge of punk, try re-educating yourself. A lot of the bands you listed aren't even really punk. Certainly not REM or Pixies. Sonic Youth had the punk ethics but they are much different in theme and sound. I'm not saying they are bad, they just aren't close to punk compared to the bands you could have picked. Sex Pistols, Ramones, and The Clash were just as mainstream and pop as FOB and Panic at the Disco if not more. And the Sex Pistols are just as manufactured. You picked the most pop song of all for The Clash when they have much better and more punk-related ones. Even White Man in Hammersmith is more punk than Should I Stay or Should I Go.

You should watch the Decline of Western Civilization. And your playlist should include The Minutemen, Gun Club, Danzig's Misfits, Iggy and the Stooges, Minor Threat, The Screamers, Siouxsie and the Banshees, X, and Germs if you want a much deeper and eye-opening introduction to punk. I'm not just listing these to say I know more bands than anyone else, I am listing them because they are all essential pioneers and very important to understanding the movement's history and ideas. Most of them are way better than

GBH, DOA, Dead Milkmen, Saccharine Trust, Rudimentary Peni, FEAR, and the Pogues are also important but I wouldn't say essential.

I am not trying to ridicule you or show you up. I am just trying to "spread the word" as you say and educate people. I love punk and I also desire for it to be accurately represented and appreciated. I don't feel your list accurately represents punk.

Sorry, but I have to disagree. Green Day is my favorite band, and though they are different than the original punk bands such as the Ramones, they ARE punk. Have you heard all of their music, or just the songs from 21st Century Breakdown? Go back to songs like Reject, No Pride, Fashion Victim, and even St.Jimmy, and you'll see that they are indeed punk. or you can call me an idiot and disagree, i dont really care if you agree or not, im just stating my opinion.

That is the saddest shit ever. I hate these people! ... Or rather, I hate the fact that people aren't making some sort of effort to introduce them to good music, as the shitty "punk" bands get there first. True Punk yay!

I was dissapointed.

Like the list, but I would choose another song with The Clash than "Should I Stay or Should I Go". It's a good song, but far from their best. I would recommend London Calling or I'm so Bored with the U.S.A.

Does people like that really excist? People who think emo's are punk?

seeing as there's a whole new generation coming who doesn't even know who The Clash is? yes! young kids nowadays don't have Rites of Spring like our punk predecessors did. now it's all My Chemical Romance.

im dont wanna get into some big argument, but punk music is not caring what anyone else thinks, rebelling, doing what you want and being the wild, singled out one. thats what Green Day songs are about. u can have ur opinions, but ill have mine.

Ahahaha, fond memories of seeing DKM live... once. But it was awesome.

Back when I was going through my major punk phase I LOVED Bad Religion, DKM, Melvins, Flogging Molly (hush, they count), Nekromantix, Mustard Plug, The Nerve Agents, Leftover Crack... Tiger Army... Glassjaw in the good ol' days... Ahh, fond memories. Now I'm more into industrial/synth/futurepop, but the CDs remain. *happy tear!* And yet it seems like poseurism has only grown. Of course, I'm sure by many standards I'm a poseur, too, but at some point it gets silly...

I guess what I'm trying to say is, there's a line between making fun of bad taste and music snobbery. XD P!atD and Fallout Boy and AFI and Linkin Park... and... *shudder* Miss Lavigne.... Yeah, those just go under bad taste. XD Alas.

Go, music re-education! Change the world! We shall cheer you on from the moshpit!
