I don't think any official outlets have created reports on the busiest highways in North America before but if you look up this highway, you will see numerous references to it being the busiest.
In all honesty I would have thought New York or Los Angeles would be busier due to the fact that they have larger populations.
The 401 has express lanes (with fewer exits) and collector lanes (where most of the traffic gets on and off the highway).Β It is like this all the way through the GTA and the average is probably 3 lanes for each section, although there are sections like this one where there are more than 6 lanes total.

Interesting. When I was near Los Angeles I tried to dodge the worst. Still got into a stop&go on 5 lines... Pretty insane.

From what I heard it gets a lot worse if you go through LA and I already had sick stop & go going around it... Well, kind of used to that from Germany...

Ya, traffic exists everywhere....but in Germany you also have to worry about photo radar.

Oh yeah, but everyone has apps and radio to warn them. I got caught one time in 8 years of driving and that was a photo trap. Basically driving on the Autobahn at around 120 km/h with the general traffic and they reduced the max speed from 120 to 100 for about 1 km and put a photo radar there... When we asked our accident insurance later they said that radar is a local gold mine...

That's a pretty awful thing to do with that 1km trap, surprised they are allowed to get away with it!

Well, I think the only rule is that they can't put a radar trap within some 300 m after a change in the speed limit...

Occasionally, I tune into 740 AM to hear CFZM's "Zoomer Radio" (I'm a channel surfer whenever I'm on the road); it's a "clear channel" station on AM, so it reaches hundreds of miles. Once in a while, I'll get a glimpse of life in Canada, especially Toronto. I think I've heard the 401 mentioned numerous times. Interesting to actually see it even though I've never been there.

It is not a glamorous highway by any means but unfortunately it's the only way to get across the city.
