whenever i tried to smudge outwards it looks nothing like yours. all my settings are the same as yours. could you maybe explain why this could be happening ? here is a pic of what it looks like when i do what you said

Sorry I'm just seeing this now - I haven't been on DA for ages - but usually when I see someone having issues, it's usually just a matter of how long their strokes are. You want to get comfortable with just doing tiny, tiny strokes that barely change how the line looks, and then slowly get bigger and bigger until you get to a point you like.
I just opened GIMP now (first time in months woo) and drew out a long black line, then smudged it with the exact settings I described. Here's my result: [link] The parts that are very blocky were made by smudging just slightly, and going inside-out on the line. The more curved and dynamic smudges are done by going outside-in and pushing the line away (leaving a curved space in the line), and then pulling out.

kinda useful , i just use the smudge tool to soft the shadows on my drawings, or to give them a "painting" effect

Yeah, this was more made for forum signatures (and that style of art) but it's always good to learn different ways of doing things, you might be able to incorporate it into a background (or I've seen it used a lot as fire or electricity effects).
