Plot Twist: The Egyptian Gods all murdered Bill's family and turned them into the Pyramids to be used as temples for their human worshippers. The death and mutilation of his family drove Bill Cipher insane and the main reason he wants to turn Earth into a hellscape of chaos is to get even with the Egyptian Gods. They destroyed his family; he'll destroy his followers. And if Gravity Falls ever gets a third season, Dipper and Mabel discover this and soon actually call out the Egyptian Gods for being assholes for doing it. And also convincing the Pharaohs to enslave the Hebrews and slaughter their sons.

"I wonder if even dream demons feel alone from time to time!?" The answer is yes according to the axolotl:
"Sixty degrees that come in threes.
Watches from within birch trees.
Saw his own dimension burn.
Misses home and can't return.
Says he's happy. He's a liar.
Blame the arson for the fire.
If he wants to shirk the blame,
He'll have to invoke my name.
One way to absolve his crime.
A different form, a different time."

When you realize what really happened to his family (in the released Journal #3) makes this a lot more heartbreaking. Basically Bill was a bit like Dipper and Ford, when Ford was young (I think? Correct me if it's wrong). But unlike them, he got so angry and out of control that he accidentally destroyed everything including his home and family. He puts on the crazy facade but inside he is still just someone who is lost.
