When you realize what really happened to his family (in the released Journal #3) makes this a lot more heartbreaking. Basically Bill was a bit like Dipper and Ford, when Ford was young (I think? Correct me if it's wrong). But unlike them, he got so angry and out of control that he accidentally destroyed everything including his home and family. He puts on the crazy facade but inside he is still just someone who is lost.
