Description Based on the novels Mistborn and The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson, "mistborn" are people with the sort of powers that make hopping across gothic spires a regular method of travel. Black ash falls from the sky like snow and stains the city, and a thick mist fills the streets.

The garment she's wearing is a "mistcloak", described in the first book as being "made of hundreds of long, ribbon-like strips [...] sewn together at the chest and shoulders, but mostly they hung separate from one another, like overlapping streamers" (p.90). It doesn't do anything particularly magical, but it's the signature attire of the Mistborn. Aside from that, her knives are glass, her pouch has a cord that can be pulled to quickly drop it from the belt, and the character is described as usually wearing trousers and a shirt and being barefoot.

I try to get the details right.

Doodled in Manga Studio EX, not more than a couple hours work on the 9x12 tablet.

Hey, I'm starting a cosmere-dedicated blog over on tumblr and I was wondering if I might be able to use this image as part of the layout? Credit and a link back here would be given, of course. However, I completely understand if you would prefer that your art not be used this way. Thank you so much.

Yeah, I think that would be all right. Credit to me, copyright to Dragonsteel Entertainment (Brandon's company).

Mistborn is ten times better than the Way of Kings, in my opinion. And I love the Way of Kings.

And Mistborn isn't? Haha. Both of them are amazing but I think the big difference for me is the characters. I like the characters in Mistborn a lot better than in Way of Kings.

I saw at least seven at Dragon*Con. Four were a matched set, and then three independent costumes, all of which looked pretty awesome.

I like 'em a bunch. It's also reassuring to know that it's a completed trilogy now, so it's easy to recommend. And with the RPG coming out in a year or so, there'll be plenty of universe-filler to enjoy if you really get into it.

This is fantastic. I love the way that you blended the hair into the cloak, and stylized the ashfall. I have to believe that Brandon Sanderson would be pleased with this one.

Neat! A different color for her clothing would help her stand out a little, and don't miss the slightly exposed midriff skin as the shirt is flapping outward.

Okay, I just read Mistborn 1 & 2 recently, and, I must say, your interpretation of the mistcloak matches my idea of it WAY more than the coverart from the actual books.

LOVE IT!

Inkthinker In reply to supercow1214 [2008-10-14 00:31:15 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I had the distinctly unfair advantage of being able to refer to the text of the book, though... it's probably something that they didn't have (at least, not in the same form) for the cover artist when he was commissioned for the work.

It's a lot easier to do visual development that holds to the book when you have the finished book to hold to.

Are you going to do some new work in honor of the 3rd book? If you haven't read it, you NEED to because it's WONDERFUL!

Inkthinker In reply to supercow1214 [2008-10-23 00:12:17 +0000 UTC]

I read it, it was awesome. Little sad at the ending, but Brandon seems to be interested in returning to the series down the line, and the end was very much looking towards a new future.

I'm really slammed all hours right now, but it seems very likely that I'll be doing a lot more Mistborn work over the next year.

supercow1214 In reply to Inkthinker [2008-10-23 01:27:54 +0000 UTC]

I know! He said on his blog that he might do some new trilogy in the same world but hundreds of years in the future, so they'd have cars, electricity and things like that, but still Allomancy. Sounds awesome to me!

Position, composition and inking are superb!
There is one detail, if you allow me, that kind of ruins the whole, in my opinion: her center of mass does not fall vertically on the pole, so she's doomed to fall. Unless you mean it to be so, but my personal opinion is that this... disquieting, although this is a rather strong word, detail kind of disrupts the elegance and peace that the picture communicates to me.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Inkthinker In reply to Tazio-Bettin [2008-08-09 10:56:23 +0000 UTC]

The character is in motion rather than static. The Mistborn pull and push themselves by latching onto metal objects with their power, allowing them to basically propel themselves from point to point in great leaps and bounds.

But yeah, lots of people have noted that she's off-center, and since it only makes sense if you're familiar with the books, I should have worked out a better way to show the action. If you can't follow it as a stand-alone work, I didn't do my job.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tazio-Bettin In reply to Inkthinker [2008-08-09 23:39:24 +0000 UTC]

I don't think this can't be followed as a stand-alone work, and the result is still splendid, in my opinion. You know what, I think the "something's out of place" feeling is because her feet suggest a motion from the left part of the picture to the right, as in a leap forward. However, her hair is moved by a wind that goes the same direction. But if she's moving forwards, her hair should maybe be behind her, and thus on the left half of the picture.
If the wind is strong enough, there's nothing wrong in making her hair move to the right like you did: it's not irrealistic, but to suggest the idea of leaping forward, the other choice might have been more effective, composition-wise.
But that's just me pointing an over-finicky detail, really.

It's not like the artwork's unenjoyable, mind you. Quite the contrary, it is a stunning picture, and I absolutely love the elegance of it, the high contrast of black and whites, the way you chose to fill empty spaces with the black flakes.

Yeah you rule at this. I'm always fond to see what kind of composition and shading an artist chooses when only working with black and white and yours always seem spot on.
