You always say that I need to teach you to design outfits, but I really don't think I can teach you anything about that.
I can offer advice, though. Whenever you see costume designs you like, really look closely and try to dissect the clothing and its components into layers. Pay attention to details and experiment with the shapes of the clothing, as well as the cut.
For practicality, when you're designing an outfit, imagine the fabric of the shirt or jacket laid out in front of you and how it fits around the character, stays up, or holds its shape. Look for the seams, buttons, and zippers in your own clothing. Just by looking through your closet and observing what other people wear you can get a lot of good ideas.
