Description
I am by no means the first person to think of this crossover idea nor am I the first to create a roster for it, but I have noticed a distinct lack of a proper select screen for it. So, I decided to change that.Roster:
Much like Marvel vs. Capcom 3, the base roster consists of 36 characters, with 18 for each side and with 4 unlockable characters. 8 additional fighters would be released as DLC and a further 16 would be added in the penultimate...um, Ultimate version, because of course there'd be one.
`: Indicates an unlockable character.
*: Indicates a character was added in the Ultimate edition.
^: Indicates that a character was released as DLC.
Capcom Side:
First Row: Akira Kazama (Rival Schools)^, Donovan Baine (Darkstalkers)*, Captain Commando*, Frank West (Dead Rising)*, Asura (Asura's Wrath)*
Second Row: Lord Raptor (Darkstalkers)^, Nemesis (Resident Evil)*, Gill (Street Fighter)*, Vergil (Devil May Cry)*, Dr. Wily (Mega Man)*
Third Row: Morrigan Aensland (Darkstalkers), Jill Valentine (Resident Evil), Ryu (Street Fighter), Dante (Devil May Cry), X (Mega Man X)
Fourth Row: Jedah Dohma (Darkstalkers)`, Strider Hiryu (Strider), Chun-Li (Street Fighter), Lady (Devil May Cry), Sigma (Mega Man X)
Fifth Row: Franziska von Karma (Ace Attorney)^, Nina (Breath of Fire), Juri Han (Street Fighter), Arthur (Ghosts n' Goblins), Princess Devilotte (Cyberbots)`
Sixth Row: Rathalos (Monster Hunter)^, Mike Haggar (Final Fight), Gene (God Hand), Viewtiful Joe, Amaterasu (Okami)
DC Side:
First Row: Blue Beetle (Jaime Reyes)*, Green Arrow*, Adam Strange*, Martian Manhunter*, Terra^
Second Row: Lobo*, Static*, Plastic Man*, Swamp Thing*, Larfleeze^
Third Row: Superman, The Flash (Barry Allen), Batman, Green Lantern (John Stewart), Wonder Woman
Fourth Row: Lex Luthor, Power Girl, Nightwing, Deathstroke, Mr. Mxyzptlk`
Fifth Row: Starfire, Aquaman, Harley Quinn, Despero, Scarecrow^
Sixth Row: Cheetah, Captain Cold (W/The Rogues)`, Raven, Black Adam, Starro^
It is also worth mentioning that the way the select screen is set up is not meant to indicate character rivalries, but they nonetheless exist. They are as follows:
- Superman vs. Ryu
- X vs. Green Lantern
- Wonder Woman vs. Morrigan Aensland
- Dante vs. Raven
- Lex Luthor vs. Jill Valentine
- Batman vs. Chun-Li
- Lady vs. Deathstroke
- Black Adam vs. Amaterasu
- The Flash vs. Viewtiful Joe
- Nina vs. Power Girl
- Sigma vs. Harley Quinn
- Arthur vs. Starfire
- Gene vs. Cheetah
- Nightwing vs. Strider Hiryu
- Juri Han vs. Despero
- Aquaman vs. Haggar
- Captain Cold vs. Devilotte
- Jedah Dohma vs. Mr. Mxyzptlk
- Terra vs. Akira Kazama
- Larfleeze vs. Lord Raptor
- Scarecrow vs. Franziska von Karma
- Starro vs. Rathalos
- Asura vs. Plastic Man
- Frank West vs. Adam Strange
- Blue Beetle vs. Captain Commando
- Static vs. Donovan Baine
- Green Arrow vs. Dr. Wily
- Vergil vs. Martian Manhunter
- Gill vs. Swamp Thing
- Lobo vs. Nemesis
General Story Premise:
Though the game lacks a proper story mode, it does have an "inciting incident", so to speak. Jedah Dohma, in his incessant quest to assimilate all life and to create a singular, ideal realm, discovers several new universes apart from his own, including the notoriously chaotic DC Universe. As a result, Jedah becomes obsessed with discovering the origins of this multiverse, seeking to assimilate both it and all other dimensions. This ambition eventually leads him to perform an experiment reminiscent of the ones conducted by the mad Oan scientist Krona, which ends up reawakening the Anti-Monitor, who sets out to conquer not just the DC Multiverse, but the many worlds within the Capcom Universe as well.
Yeah, it's Crisis on Infinite Earths again. As such, the Anti-Monitor will serve as the final boss of the game's arcade mode.
Developer's Graveyard:
There were several characters I thought about including, but didn't for various reasons. Here are just a few examples.
DC:
- Eclipso: Was almost on the base roster, but I didn't find him particularly interesting in terms of moveset potential, so I decided to include Mr. Mxyzptlk instead.
- Gorilla Grodd: A character I really wanted to include, but was ultimately cut in favor of Despero.
- Doctor Fate: Was considered as one of the characters introduced in the Ultimate version of the game, but I felt like there were enough "magic" based characters in the game.
- Booster Gold: Also considered for Ultimate, but I decided to go with Adam Strange instead.
- Granny Goodness: I thought about including her as a deep cut and as a representative for Apokolips, since I wasn't planning on including Darkseid. And although I did like the idea I came up with for her, I obviously wasn't invested enough in it to include her.
Capcom:
- Hsien-Ko: I wanted to include her as a rep for Darkstalkers 2, but decided to use Donovan instead, seeing as he hasn't been in a VS. game before..
- Simon Blackquill: Was almost the Ace Attorney rep before I settled on Von Karma.
- Seth: Was almost the boss character for the Street Fighter series, but obviously, that slot ended up going to Gill instead.
- Fou-Lu from Breath of Fire: I considered making him as the Breath of Fire rep, either alongside or in place of Nina, but didn't find him exciting enough to include.
- Monster Hunter: A character similar to the one seen in Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite was almost on the base roster, but I figured that Rathalos would be a much more interesting pick.
The roster possibilities for a game like this are pretty much endless and there were countless other characters I would've liked to include, but didn't. Overall though, I'm pretty satisfied with the roster I went with, even if it might not look exactly the same if I were to do it today.
