Little children are a difficult object because things easily get too cute..They do, however, have this unpretentious, no bullshit way of looking at you..This was intentionally ment to be a watercolor, but I got carried away doing the sketch, decided to let it stay that way..May do a watercolor later on..

Absolutely agreed on the challenge of baby/child portraits. (My problem however is never 'too cute', but instead 'too old') There's quite a lot of age you can accidentally add by a milimetre off in your strokes. Perhaps I should quit avoiding them and just practice

Hi Caroline, and thanks! Undoubtedly, one can spend a whole life aquirering skills in portrait art., and still not getting to the bottom of it..
It is facinating, though - so I suppose I’ll just keep fumbling along😊.
Looked at some of your portraits, btw, and you obviously have the eye and the skills..

Thank you, Walter! I’m afraid that portraits of babies in generel, understandable, are not very trendy..I am, however, a bit facinated by the way little people absorbs their surroundings, without attitude or prejudgement, they just glance at you, simply to find out if anybody’ s home..

Thats true, and especially if the likeness is the main purpose..But porportions has to be spot on, otherwise it just looks daft..
I’ve found it useful to do a scan of the initial sketch and compare it with the reference photo in the same scale - makes it much easier to detect flaws in proportions..

yes... babyanatomy is kind of distorted in relation to the adults.... makes it very difficult for the artist.
However... you did a gorgious job here Henrik... and I like the way your drawing developped in graphite even if it was meant to become an aquarelle.

Thanks, Dominik! It’s still a bit of a revelation to me how even minor changes in a portrait, especially around the eyes and mouth, profoundly change the whole expression..very different ballgame compared to landscape painting, indeed..
