[[WARNING; I THINK IT'S A BIG FILE. I HONESTLY DON'T REMEMBER OTL;;]]
Wooowww I can't believe I forgot about this tutorial LOOLL;;; I'm so sorry everyone! I posted this a while back on tumblr (the quality was shit /shrugs/) and I kinda just left it in my finished folder to rot hahahaa;;; but I was kindly reminded by a cute bunny drawing that was free to colour ; v ;/ So, HERE YA GO GUISEEEE!!! A small tutorial by moi~

This tutorial is more about my thinking process and how I prepare to lineart versus to actually what happens during the process. Honestly, me inking is just me tracing over my sketch. That's pretty much it. Nothing fancy with clipping group or whatever LOL

If you guys have questions feel free to send me a PM or leave a comment down in the bottom! Have a happy easter!

I change the resolution before I start linearting and I usually keep it (unless the file is too big for my computer to handle).

If I'm deciding to upload it to dA, I usually lower it by a bit because large file sizes are harder to view u v u; but I have an original copy of the larger sized picture.

Hope this helped!

Ahhh I see, thanks for the help! I just found the stabilizer to be harder to use over large canvases, so I was wondering if I was doing something wrong...

None the less, thank you!

What do you mean harder to use? Does it "lag" more you mean?...

NightmareSora In reply to heartbleep [2013-11-26 07:33:36 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm that might be the word... Β it's more like since it's covering more distance but in a small amount of time, it's kinda forced to keep up with your pen/pointer and unable to stabilize things effectively.Β

Like, having the stabilizer on max then sliding it from one edge of the screen to the other- but on a zoomed out canvas. Now do it again from one screen edge to the next, but zoomed in quite a bit. You'll feel the line to be much easier to control zoomed in rather than zoomed out, even if the lines are the same size visually on both.

Sorry, it's not something I can explain easily xD You just kinda feel it.

heartbleep In reply to NightmareSora [2013-11-30 04:11:04 +0000 UTC]

Ohhh, I get it now! Yeah, since you've zoomed in so far in, you're covering a smaller surface area which is technically easier to control vs. drawing a line on a huge amount of space.

Mmm yeah that makes sense... I guess only practice will help me there hehe.

Thanks for answering my silly confusing questions!Β

Is it that I have another version of Painttoolsai cos a lot of tutorials say use the ink pen, but its not in my tools .-. neither is binary (I saw it in da pic .-. but it really aint there) confuzzled .-.

Version 1.1.0 so yea

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

heartbleep In reply to RubixPsyche [2013-10-05 16:12:34 +0000 UTC]

My version of PTS is 1.1.0, so that's not your problem. I think some versions of SAI don't have it because it's just another pen tool with the word "ink" placed in front of it. The pen tool is a fantastic substitute for the ink pen tool, so don't worry about it.

Plus, this tutorial is kind of outdated. I've changed my lineart tools/method since this tutorial was uploaded. I now alternate between the marker and brush tools in SAI!

Hiya! I ran into your tutorial, and I must say this quite interesting! I use vectors personally mainly because I don't have a very steady hand v.v

May I ask why you like this method instead though? :3
Perhaps I will try this method anyway and see how it works for me~

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

heartbleep In reply to DemonNinjaGirl [2012-04-12 01:45:33 +0000 UTC]

I think that both vectors and digitally lining are both great ways to ink a drawing. It's more of a personal reason why I opt to choose this method of linearting rather than vectoring. I like the natural feel of actually using my pen to trace over my sketch. For me, the curve tool feels a bit too unnatural and it's kinda hard to manipulate D: Plus I don't really have a problem with shaky hands when I lineart so, yeah. It's just personal preference and my own feel towards my art.

LOOL SORRY FOR BIG WALL OF TEXT. and sorry if some parts don't make sense QQ n QQ;; it's something that you have to feel and experience, and it's kinda hard to put what I feel when linearting into words lool;;; but i hope this gives you better insight and answers your question! o v o

DemonNinjaGirl In reply to heartbleep [2012-04-12 04:10:21 +0000 UTC]

Oh it totally makes sense! Don't apologize!

For a long time I didn't know about vectors and tried tracing over my artwork with the pen tool (I use sai as well) but I never found a tutorial like yours to use it properly. I was actually just taking it and tracing, using black and not really thinking it through. Then I found a neat little vector tutorial and found that my artwork turned out much smoother and cleaner looking. Yeah, my hand tends to shake the slower I try to be >n< so the vectors tend to help with that issue.

But I really enjoy art like yours and was very curious on how to get such thin and pretty lines that makes the art so...pretty ^^''''
If there was a way to use vectors and get the same result (there probably is somewhere) then that would be amaaazing. I defiantly will try to give this a try though!
Sorry if this seems like a rant, but I thank you for taking the time to reply to me~

Most people that I comment on never reply >3>

wow! thx for this great tutorial, I will definitely try out the pen tool.

I'm not really experienced with sai paint tool and I use pen and it's very... PRESENT in my drawings. even if I put the opacity down on it, it looks wrong.

it's always nice to know what other people use.

Really? o n o;; that seems wrong LOL... you can try lowering the "density" option on the pen tool settings. see if that helps!
