Description
This is for Dragonsmana's Cryptid files project, located here:[link]
These creatures seem to be benevolent despite their demonic appearance - they tend to show up around areas of pending disaster, as if trying to warn people of imminent danger. That being said, their method of communication seems to be scaring the bejesus out of people so they'll run away. However there are no cases of a creature actually physically harming anyone.
I imagine them as extra-dimensional entities, who's physical appearance in our dimension is flavored by the fears of the observer. Although no one seems to have gotten a clear look at them, the few features they all share (very tall, wings, large, glowing eyes) seems to be drawn on our own subconscious imagery of what "danger" would look like. This makes me wonder if this is intentional? Perhaps these beings are unable to communicate with us directly, so the next best thing is to assume an evil demonic shape and scare everyone away before the reactor goes critical?
Mothman has been seen Chernobyl, at the World Trade center, and most famously at the Sliver Bridge on Dec.15 1967 as depicted in the Movie "The Mothman Chronicles."
However much I would like to think such a creature is benevolent, that would not stop me from running if I were to encounter one.
Edit: For those who haven't seen my latest journal, this piece is going to be featured in an Animal Planet show called "Freak Encounters" about Mothman. The show is set to air on 11/9/10. Check out the preview here (my piece appears at 1:54 and 2:09)

It's a Mothman. It's based off of an urban legend in Point Pleasant, WV that caused a bridge to collapse.

If I ever encountered that cryptid here in Sweden, I'd turn my electric wheelchair around as quickly as I can and push the electric engine to the max.

A lot of people don't believe the Mothman's existence to be plausible. I disagree. Brilliant rendition of the Mothman.

Hi I am a researcher working on a TV program. We might be interested in using this image in our episode on Mothman. Do you own the image and if so would you be interested in letting us use it? I tried your website link but it didn't work. Could you email me at my address in my profile.
Thanks

Awesome! Very unique take on the Mothman. I had a similar idea when talking to my friend on the game Monster Hunter a couple years ago. That the Mothman was evil and the Jersey Devil was good. As if one is a demon of death and the other is a gaurdian of life. Big difference is, my Mothmans evil lol. Your picture is both awesome and scary! Love it!

Thanks man, glad you liked it! I wanted to get one more piece in for your cryptid files before August was up. I would have liked to have done a lot more, just got too many other things going on.

Its ok dude. I'm pretty sure you'll be able to get in some E.T. Files when that shows up. Hope you don't have as much going on when I start them.

Very cool!!! Question, in the movie, do you get to see any part of the alien?

hawanja In reply to Jazon19 [2008-08-25 18:39:12 +0000 UTC]
Not really, you see slight glimpses of it from flashbacks and such, as well as drawings of it. I was actually kinda disappointed that they never give us a clear view of the monster.
It's more of a psycological mystery type movie than horror or a creature flick, and is worth a rental for the soundtrack alone.

For $10, maybe. It is pretty creepy, but keep in mind it's not a creature flick, you never really see the monster.

Ill enjoy it im sure. Infact, most movies you dont see the monster are hardcore. Nothings more frightening than your own imagination. .

Upon seeing that thing in real life you'd probably shit bricks and pass out if you weren't already running away from it. Coolest illustration of the critter I've seen yet.
