Description It was one of those days where
The sky begged me to believe in God.
The colors hugged the horizon so tight -
It was rich with
(possibilities?)
Pastels, oh, and how they
Hit me in the chest like realization and a
Good dose of
Heroin

We took the One past Davenport, past
Pescadero, flying by a coastline that
Enchanted everyone but the locals.
Paintings were framed in car windows, of
Enchanted groves, cherub art,
A biblical ocean, scenery that's
Kitsch and lovely and belongs on your
Bathroom wall

We left the car lonely on some
Person's private driveway, with
A foreboding path with foreboding gravel and
Weeds that chased our ankles like
Rattlesnakes.
You thought there was a path, I remember, where
Nature wraps thorned vines around our ankles, and I fell
Into cracks,
Splits in the earth like headaches where California
Shrugged and forgot us.
We were peppered with scratches when we hit the sand
And I wish you had tolding me that finding Shangrila
Would sting a little.

You boys set fires with precious gasoline
And laughed as the explosion
Took half your eyelashes
You soaked singed fingers in cool streams and said,
That's a haircut I won't have to pay for

The sundress I wore was pink and
Orange, can you remember?Β Β How I'd
never wear a dress without
Some denim to hug my legs.
And that's as feminine as I'd get, pulling
The strap of a 60's tank dress
Back up my shoulder - how I had
Wished I had matching tattooes.

Barefoot, past the sandcrab graveyards
which fell on the slopes of sand plateaus
With sand in my toes, and
A small fortune in sand dollars in my hands
I realize they would buy me nothing
And gave them to David instead

We had braved the jungle there, but
Darkness turns bravery into
Stupidity
So we wrapped our hands around a rope
And our legs around determination
And climbed the cliff face at
A slope of seventy five

On the drive back you lips cried,
Cracked and split
So we rolled down the windows to
Kiss the night air, and let it
Kiss us (with the brutality of
Highway speeds)
My hair was unsalvageable, but our laughter
Wasn't

I like how the line lengths are uneven as the moments a litter rougher.

*sings*
Anyone could see
The road that they walk on is paved in gold
And it's always summer, they'll never get cold
They'll never get hungry
They'll never get old and gray
You can see their shadows
Wandering off somewhere
They won't make it home
But they really don't care
They wanted the highway
They're happy there today

Yay for one hit wonders from the 90s.

Heh, I seem to have deviated a little in my stream-o-conscious rambling.

Delightful read. Makes me want to hit up the shore.

mmm fastball. i used to listen to that song religiously - i'm a 90s one-hit-wonder lover. i never dreamed that i'd be pulling a summer quite like it, though.

hit up the shore. if it all leads to something outrageous, i'd love to hear about it

This is gorgeous, I don't even know where to start. Your poetry is amazing. I wish I could write like that. ^^

ahhh...it brings back so much...of my own youth and adventures,
days like that seem immortal

there's a s sacred placed like that in my youth, a forty minute walk off a wooden road rich in teenage myths,
it was a rock quarry, on top of a mountain,
the mountain saved itself by hiding an underground spring, that when the miner dug too deep filled the scar they made with a crystal clear lake,
and we built fires there,
and we smoked,
and we drank,
and jumped off the rocks, challenging the water's depth and our own immortality,

Thank you for bring back these memories, it's your genius at descriptive text that makes this a true work of art. Almost bringing tears to my eyes, and calling up some old ghost of my own.

mmm, dwelling with ghosts. i like having them over for tea. and after conversing with such company, one can always find something to write about.

you should write about that place - memories love to become immortal.

then i dare you to go find an adventure. do something random and spontaneous. drive somewhere without knowing where you're driving, cuz you'll know once you find it. it'll always be worth writing about

There’s something dizzying about this poem. Whether it’s the thrill of speeding up the highway or the gas fumes, I’m having trouble seeing straight.
But maybe that’s what makes this poem so full, how fast it is. Packs a punch, just like your sunset. Maybe it’s how simple and universal the story isβ€” somewhere between the bonfires and the sand dollars, the sun dress and mussed-up hair, I keep seeing a couple of little kids running around on the beach, digging for sand crabs and building castles.

But chintzy? Kitsch? That stretch of coast? Maybe the fumes’re getting to you, too. . . .

And I love that, despite how raw you make your adventure soundβ€”with your scratches from the sand, your weeds, your sand crab graveyards, your split lipsβ€”there’s something still so beautiful about it.

(Man, I miss you.)

i'll take you to this beach someday, i promise - it's well-worth the drive.
days like those just don't seem to come along as often as they used to. david's an adventure instigator, he's the one who can talk cam off the couch and into the car - i'm not very good at it.
i wonder how many times it's possible to hunt for babylon.

(i miss you too)

mmm, that sounds like a magnificent time. it's time like that that make me wish i were a master painter, not a novice writer. the colors can never quite be explained, neither can the free-from-the-world feeling that comes along with them
