space gives us a broad
untroubled forehead that looms gunmetal blue
above the tops of the trees we call our secret
conference hall
where we cry like the beasts
that leave daily footprints
on daily trails
through this backyard canyon

the sky is peppered,
they say,
with a more unnerving shade of
gunmetal

with your byzantine beliefs we've been left
to sink our feet into spaces
the earth left between the mud and the rain
as it sighed and
sagged and
took a load off for once
the pistol-tinted lions have
taken off from its shoulders
to trouble the brow above us
as we whisper below, the air-raid siren wails
like some unknown creature in
pre-mourning

your lips were painted purple and silver as
battle
slipped from between them
so i pointed my umbrella upward
like a firearm
and held the sky at gunpoint

napalm lit the ground at the back of my vision
and the back of my mind
as with a hop, skip and a jump
i stole a kiss from your
checkered lipstick
