Chapter 13

As Rakene walked beside Jerek to where the Council were currently debating, he began to dwell over how Jennifer was taking the situation. A female human, known for being unable to really take pain, but really, when a male human got a cold it was like the world was ending for the poor sod. She hadn’t even screamed yet. Rakene smirk at that thought, then realised she would be with Shadel Abyssiren for a while yet. If anything could make anyone scream, let alone Jennifer, it would be him.

Jennifer entered through a thick wooden door, into a large hall. Shadel followed closely behind her. Too close. She gulped and slid faster forward while he shut the door, so to put some space between them. Trying to not get distracted, Jennifer concentrated on her surroundings.

The hall was brighter than the one at the entrance; many fire torches hung at the wall and stood on stands around the hall. Agility equipment hung from the slightly lower ceiling, chains and poles and staffs. Even weapons like crossbows and swords lay in a stack.

Alexander was already in the hall. She was fighting a vampire, both wielding swords. She was skilful, fast and light on her feet, and her eyes had a strange way of getting brighter as she fought. Jennifer watched her for a moment.

The vampire wasn’t struggling, he was also skilled, and by the expression on Alexander’s face, she knew that too.

Jennifer jumped as Shadel brushed her shoulder with one of his arms, which were crossed, and was standing next to her, eyes on the fight. He looked angry; he was scowling at the pair. What’s his problem? Jennifer thought.

“That vampire is my problem,” he said suddenly and Jennifer looked up at him. His eyes narrowed. “He shouldn’t be touching my fledgling. He knows it. He knows better than to even brush a hand on her arm, or even look at her too long. He is a filthy bastard.”

Jennifer scrutinized the fighters. “I don’t see him doing anything….well….you know. He’s just fighting her.”

“Ah, but you see, he is an inferior vampire, he mustn’t touch her because she is my fledgling. His blood is filth, his race is filth. So his touch is filth.”

Shadel continued to glare harshly at the vampire. Jennifer watched out of the corner of her eyes as Shadel moved the fingers of one of his hands delicately in his crossed arms. Jennifer looked back at the fighters.

Alexander was pummelling forward, using up a lot of energy, hoping to knock the vampire from the inner circle. He was deftly deflecting, but he was being backed closely to the edge, near a shadowy corner. Jennifer watched in awe as a bit of the shadow slithered forward, like an eyeless, mouthless, boneless black snake. It curled sneakily around the vampire’s ankle, soft as cotton. Then with a flick of Shadel’s finger, it jerked the vampire off his balance and he was thrown to the floor. Shadel chuckled darkly.

Alexander watched the vampire hit the floor, looking a bit out of breath, then scowled at her feet. Glancing only once at Shadel, she threw her sword down by the vampire and stalked over to a bench to sit. The vampire looked slightly twitchy, glancing around for whatever had grabbed his ankle. But the black tendril was gone. The vampire got up and made a hasty retreat for the door.

While Shadel was distracted by the vampire, Jennifer walked over to Alexander.

Alexander look up, gazed at her a moment, then looked away. Jennifer stood idly, before sitting on the bench.

“So I see you’ve met my master.” Alexander growled suddenly.

“Well, yer. Er, what’s wrong with him?”
Jennifer had said this between her teeth. She was dead scared of Shadel, and he was really creepy, but she detected some sort of anger in Alexander’s voice.

Alexander let out a little laugh.
“What’s wrong with him? Ha! That’s the first time I heard someone say that, let alone a human,” Alexander turned serious, keeping her gaze down. “he is a dangerous person, probably one of the most powerful Vampyrs in the world. He is….difficult to be a master, so to speak.”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, he’s demanding. He is always wanting for me to improve, and all the time. He also won’t let me prove myself. Keeps on helping me, like I’m some sort of child.”

“He may be creepy, but if he’s that powerful, than I wouldn’t mind some help from him.”

“Yer, but I’m his fledgling. I’m supposed to learn how to fight for myself once I’m turned Vampyr. Not that I think I ever will be.”

“Why not?”

“First, if he keeps helping me at this rate I’ll never be able tot fight a battle on my own. And anyway, the Council are strict about who become Vampyrs, because they are just so powerful. And I think they’re pretty scared of what Shadel will make me into.”

“Make you into? Sheesh, he is scary, but it’s not like he’s a monster.”

Alexander turned her red gaze on her. “You have never seen him in battle. You have never seen him fight for his glory, using his rage and his powers. At his age, I wouldn’t be kidding by saying he’s killed billions of people.”

Jennifer swallowed.

“My master also has a distinct hate for vampires. And he won’t let me forget it, not by a long shot. The Council are afraid he’ll mould me into some sort of bloodthirsty servant of his, and bring the Council down.”

“That doesn’t sound fun.” Jennifer said lamely, feeling pretty miserable. Alexander chuckled.

“So why are you here?” Alexander asked, turning towards her.

“Oh, well, I’m kinda just following Rakene. Apparently the Council want me for something.”

“That’s doesn’t sound good. The Council are manipulative bastards, and my master doesn’t even have to tell me that. I’ve seen them twist the free will out of many,” Alexander said seriously. She pointed are Jennifer. “No matter how nice they are to you, don’t trust them.”

Jennifer nodded. She saw Shadel walking towards them, thankfully bereft of a scowl, and Jennifer’s happy mood plummeted. The mischievous look on his face made her skin crawl.

“Oh crap…..” Jennifer heard Alexander whisper from behind her. “He’s in a happy mood again……”

Jennifer didn’t like the tone in Alexander’s voice, nor the crazy look on Shadel’s face, but sat frozen on the bench.

“How are you girls up for a little game?” he said darkly, closing in on them.
