Starlight and Roses — Description

I'm seeing 20 different issues with this piece, but I'm gonna accept it as-is so I can keep up with my semi-regular upload streak and work on something else.

Note: The title is a play on the idiom "Moonlight and Roses."

Starlight Glimmer’s biggest ambition after Twilight graciously welcomed her as a student was to reunite with her childhood friend, Sunburst. When they encountered each other for the first time in ages at the Crystal Empire, Starlight clumsily tried to reignite their bond in any way she could. Lengthy and awkward conversations, little adventures, playing childhood board games, playing childhood board games while magically age regressed. Some of those attempts had better outcomes than others. After many hurdles, Starlight would eventually succeed. The two ponies would marry and have two healthy, unexpected twin foals, which they named Glistening Sunshine and Scorching Supernova. She was happy. For a while.

Sometime before becoming a mother, Starlight noticed her relationship with Sunburst was slowly straining. He seemed so… Distant and aloof. She always thought starting a family would tighten her bond with her best friend, which is why she begged her dear Sunburst to have foals, but her plan was failing. When Sunburst approached Starlight to end their marriage, Starlight yelled at him in blind fury and stormed off from their home. There wasn’t a sign of the mare’s presence for days, but one night, Starlight would sneak into the house to attempt a kidnapping while Sunburst was asleep. However, she did not know that Sunburst’s appointed knight, Spearhead, was stationed at his home in case she came back to stir up trouble. With his intervention, Spearhead successfully stopped Starlight from kidnapping both foals, but tragically, Spearhead failed to save little Nova. No one has seen or found Starlight Glimmer or their missing foal since.

Starlight’s betrayal left Sunburst scared and afraid for little Sunshine, but to his relief, no one would ever see that treacherous mare again. Spearhead stuck around the house to protect his friend and his motherless foal. Sunburst became overprotective due to Starlight’s actions, but Spearhead’s easygoing and trusting nature managed to prevent some of Sunburst’s smothering traits from stifling Sunny’s life. The relationship between the two stallions would develop, and Sunshine would develop into a cheerful little pony with a passion for magic. Unlike his relationship with his ex-wife, Sunburst and Spearhead’s love for Sunshine brought them closer together, leading to their marriage and Sunshine having two whole dads.

Nova, on the other hand, struggled frequently through their early years. Starlight’s dedication to obscuring herself from the public isolated her foal from much of society. To hide their identities further, she renamed her foal to “Gleaming Eclipse” and called herself “Firefly.” Eclipse’s mother, being well-educated, was more than happy to homeschool her beloved foal’s young developing mind all by herself, but her incessant stifling prevented them from making any long-lasting friends. Starlight being Eclipse’s only caretaker also meant they were left home alone quite often. This turned Eclipse into a very lonely and poorly-adjusted adult, often daydreaming and wondering what life would be like if their mother let them make friends and go to public school.

Starlight, a pony with a well-known reputation with important leaders across Equestria, is lucky she was able to evade detection for so long. Out of necessity, Starlight became a master of disguise and purposely chose to move to a faraway town that is fairly secluded. Most of the ponies leave Starlight alone, and whenever Eclipse is taken outside Starlight is careful to dress Eclipse in clothes that will obscure their appearance. After over a decade, Starlight began caring less and less about obscuring Eclipse’s identity when her growing foal stayed inside more often and people across Equestria forgot about this cold case.

Neither of the twins have properly met each other, but what they both have in common is a love for magic and a curiosity for what the rest of their family is like. Eclipse never seen any family outside of Starlight herself, and Sunshine wonders who their mother is and what she’s like. For some reason, Sunburst and Spearhead refuse to tell their kid who their mother is, but maybe Sunshine’s grandparents know something…
