Cinderpelt states at one point that she couldn’t save Brightheart’s eye or ear, which to me suggests that the majority, of not the entirety, of her ear was torn away and Cinderpelt couldn’t heal it. The text supports her having shredded ears and one more than the other.

It says HALF of her face and a pile of fur was ripped away from her face but her ear must be hard to pull off

“Fireheart spun around and raced across the clearing to crouch beside Brightpaw. Her white-and-ginger fur, which she had always kept so neatly groomed, was spiky with drying blood. On one side of her face the fur was torn away, and there was blood where her eye should be. One ear had been shredded, and there were huge claw marks scored across her muzzle.” (A Dangerous Path, pgs. 217-218)

“'Even if she recovers, she'll be hideously scarred,' Cinderpelt warned him. 'I couldn't save her eye or ear. I don't know that she'll ever be a warrior.'” (A Dangerous Path, pg. 220)

There, it says right there in the text that one ear was shredded, not just scratched, and then later Cinderpelt saying that she couldn't save the ear, which to me says that she might have nipped away any stray bits that were just hanging onto the shredded ear, leaving a very short ear or just a stump left behind, sort of like how Leafpool nipped away the rest of Berrynose's tail because it wasn't salvageable and would've just gotten infected if left attached to the rest of his body. I don't see why it should be difficult for a large dog with large jaws to clamp down its teeth onto an ear, which is very thin, and tear through the skin with the teeth and tear it away from the rest of the ear.

What is “it?” That’s not a quote from the books. The quotes I provided above are from a Dangerous Path and clearly state that Brightheart has a shredded ear.
