NOTE: I did NOT finish painting the tail, only the mane.YAY! I finally made it, after weeks of putting it off.
I hope that you guys enjoy this tutorial, it's a little messy, but at least I got my point across. This is sort of a WIP/preview of the manip that I'm working on, but oh well.

I don't think you're doing anything wrong, just keep practicing! And If I were you I would work on a much bigger image, usually my canvas is at least 2000 px wide and 3000 px tall.Β

Hi there,
I don't know how you could achieve this result without a tablet, but here are a few tutorials that may help. The only other way that I know about is smudging to achieve a mane and tail, although it's far more difficult.

Just keep practicing, it takes about 30 or maybe 50 pieces of practice artwork to get painting down...also if you have a graphics tablet it'll help enormously.

for the shadows, do you paint them on a layer beneath all of the highlights, or above? owo
