This is Princess' leg wound before we took her to the vet. There is a chunk of flesh the approximate size of a softball missing from her leg.

She stepped through or on a pipe fence at her former owner's pasture six weeks ago. For six weeks Princess' owner did nothing. That's right, nothing. She left the horse in a poor pasture without access to clean water or good food, let alone medical care. For six weeks this poor horse stumbled around on two front legs that are horribly injured and did NOTHING. ENDRs came along and convinced the owner to relinquish her or face chages. That was the easy part.

Now comes the hard part, getting her better again and teaching her that not all people suck big ass like her former owner did. We took her to the vet who cleaned out her wound after heavily sedating her. He picked out bits of hay, rocks, manure etc from her wound until this is what we were left with. That white you see in the middle of the wound is bone.

The initial vet bill will total over $1,000 and then there will her aftercare which will be even more expensive. What can you do? Donate money to help cover the costs of her rehab. Donate a dollar or a hundred. If you can't donate any money then pass along her story because there are hundreds more just like her. We have to do better because this just breaks my heart. We have to do better.

Her treatment included xrays of front hooves b/c she had at least an inch worth of laminitic rings and she could barely walk. The vet said we needed to know if she had foundered from the pain and problems with properly bearing weight. His recommendation was to euthanize her if her coffin bone had rotated. The xrays revealed no rotation and the exposed bone showed no evidence of osteomyelitis (tough little mare!). He debrided the wounds, gave IV sedation, antibiotics, tetanus antitoxin, coggins, and sent me home with intravenous intramuscular and oral medication to treat her for several weeks. He spent several hours working on her.

Although ENDRS accepted custody of her, the Humane Society of the Ozarks paid her initial vet bilI. I would like to raise $1,000 for the Humane Society of the Ozarks on behalf of this little paint mare. Below is the Photobucket I started for her. There are pics of us picking her up, at the vet and then safely tucked in at ENDRS. There is a video of her walking to the trailer. We gave her 10 ml of IV Banamine & a medium dose of ace promazine before we loaded her. She was still sore after that much Banamine & sedation!!
