You don't sound like an idiot, don't worry ^^ (I know this is old but pff)
when people notice scars, usually from self harm, they tend to stare at that person's arm and/or ask questions about it, and it irritates the person with the scars and makes them uncomfortable, so they feel like saying "look at your own arm, asshole"
