Description
So the other day I found this cute little bust i.imgur.com/tHmeGwn.jpegAnd I decided to sketch me a new design for novel Rexy. I dunno, I just LOVE how much personality there is in this bust alone so I may as well drink the full cup and even make the full on painting with the novel dinos... eventually.
Obviously, the design we got in the movie went through changes (and a different color since she is red/brown in the book) so I am going for a middle ground between Tim Lawrence's original design and Marc McCreery final one. The arms will be on the bigger side and more mobile (it's a mutated clone and NOT a genuine dino after all, so I'd rather go full pulp with her XD).
The lips... I went with them for the sake of personality and cuteness XD.
See, the whole "T-Rex TOTALLY had lips!" is factually arguable. The french Youtube channel "Entracte Science" surmised that it could be EITHER way. It's a 50-50 situation. The absence of meaty lips per say would not bother T-Rex for a simple reason: these things constantly grow teeth back! Even Rex skulls show generations of teeth ! So you can go either way really. Objectively, dinosaurs are bones or fragments so the best we can do is only mustering educated guesses as to what they were TRULY like. So anyone who claims "THIS IS WHAT REAL T-REX IS LIKE !" needs to tone the bragging down...
Also, IF she had lips, her teeth would not really be all that appearant from outside and they would be mobile as I drew them here...
Her BLACK tongue is book-only and I LOVE IT. It frigging took me aback the first I read it XD Of course, since the closest thing we've got to Tyrannosaurus Rex nowadays are birds or crocodiles, I personally don't imagine the real deal sticking its tongue out but HEY, who knows ? Weirder things have happened and are real.
As for what she would sound like, OK it's a pretty rich coming from someone who only draws as a hobby, there's a whole playlist that is pretty fascinating ! Here's for Rexy precisely www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9Dw9k… ... The novel describes her sound as otherwordly so, this REALLY fits the bill IMO. An otherwordly toothy chonky bird...
Just to sum up what I think of the movies (consider this as an update... oh and Crichton's first novel is still one of my favorites warts and all ! The 2nd ain't too shabby BUT it is nowhere near as inspired):
* JURASSIC PARK : Inspiring and influential ? YES. Overrated ? Also YES. Sorry fellas but I always felt that this movie was a mere hors-d'oeuvre and after having watched the sequel as a kis and discovered that there was a book (of which it misses the central point) even later in life... well it just does not satiate me much...
* JURASSIC PARK THE LOST WORLD : My favorite of the bunch, the best of the bunch and if I'm wrong, fuck being right then ! I shall live in sin and roll in it like a Komodo Dragon rolls in viscera at lunch. For a movie that is darker and nastier in every meaning of the word, it actually handles the dinos BETTER ! The cliff scene and the rex couple reappearing ? San Diego incident ? Bike chasing the herbivors herds ? FANTASTIC ! Plus this flick made the raptors more primal, direct and...PLAUSIBLE behavior wise ?!
* JURASSIC PARK III : ... yeah, if you know me, you know I really don't like this one. Though, there's one video that makes me glad it exists www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7NJJ6…
* JURASSIC WORLD : I honestly still like it. Is it just cheesy pulp ? Most definitely. But I'd say it nailed some Crichton tropes I love and has the bite I wish the first Jurassic Park had back then. I dig the Indominus Rex as the glorious murderous abomination she is and still think THIS the most accurate Chris Pratt ever got to play the Giffen/DnA version of Starlord. Plus, the raptor pack is NOT tame per say...
* JURASSIC WORLD FALLEN KINGDOM : ... yeah, this one gets worse and worse. But hey with the right mindset for violence, alcohol and stupidity it's fun. Also, Indoraptor deserved better. Like visiting a nursery or a kindergarten...
* JURASSIC WORLD DOMINION :... Sooooo...what in the name of hell were they thinking ? Why the fuck did the Giganotosaurus die when it was basically minding its own business ? Why the fuck are we not focusing on how much of a nightmare the world becomes with pissed off dinos around ? Why the fuck are locusts the focus ? AND WHY THE FUCK AREN'T THOSE LOCUSTS MUTATING INTO FLESH EATERS ?! Glad I did not pay to see this !
And be sure to watch Prehistoric Planet ! The "Walking With" series is pretty nice even if outdated (NO. I won't mock it because 1) It is still based on supposition and extrapolation and on the information we had back then 2) Science in general is in constant flux, we ALWAYS discover new things even if we could never have imagined them beforehand. So a little humility would be nice...)
