Description
SO I watched Robert Eggers' latest movie (and one he really wanted to make); Nosferatu.
It's damn good. Even better than his 1st movie about the dangers of agriculture in the Evil Dead forest & baby lotion.
I also love how much of an imperious commanding douchebag Orlok is ! Dude does not even attempt to be polite...
"YOU ARE FALSE! So you wish me to prove my enmity as well? I will leave you three nights! Tonight was the first. Tonight you denied yourself, and thereby you suffer me to vanish up the lives of those you love!"

Indeed, It was a good movie. Now I want to see the original just to appreciate it more.
Also, good portrait of Count Orlok

My favorite scene in the original is how Orlok is moving to his new home... but nobody is here to help the poor guy Nosferatu (1922) but it's just him carrying the coffin

I dunno if it's sunlight or if they couldn't film at night XD
It seems that for Orlok, the sun is not the issue so much that it a time problem (after all, he is there thanks to black magic !)

Robert Eggers has become one of my favorites. Even if his movies do have flaws, he has this whimsy about them that I love so much. Plus, I watched the original Nosferatu as a kid. It honestly terrified me. So of course, I loved this movie a lot. This song does fit the character a lot...

Watching some clips of Skarsgard's performance as Orlok, I was astonished by his acting rang. In an interview he mentioned that he took singing lessons.

All the hype this film got made me really nervous that it'd be a dud. Thankfully turned out to be good time, though only time will tell if I'll ever like it as much as the 1922 and 1979 films. I imagine trying to re-watch the movie in a room that isn't utterly pitch black will be a challenge. 😓

Frankly I already like it very much if only for Orlok being such an imperious douchebag XD At least, Lugosi, Oldman, Cage and Book Barlow are charming and even alluring to their victims. This Orlok is so hilariously disagreeable on the other hand... XD

It has always been a bit strange, both in the book and other Dracula adaptations, where the hell did this undead boyar living in seclusion learn enough manners and courtesy to pass as a 19th century man???

And this one is even less courteous than the OG Orlok ! XD
But he is rich so he has the right to purchase a German mansion... even if he brings a legion of rats and the plague with him.
I did enjoy Eggers' Witch movie but this one is much more fun and riveting. At least Orlok was opposing people who had a chance against him while Black Philip and his filthy nudists were playing it on "very easy" mode...

Personally I never was that much of a fan of The VVitch and The Lighthouse despite having some pretty good scenes in them. Too bone-chilling, spine tingling, slow-burn, jumpscare free, character driven, genre defining for my taste.
I did love The Northman though.

True but I do like the talking corpse route they went with. But hey, at least Orlok gave the legion of rats some proper employment XD

It was wonderful to watch a movie where the vampire is a monster than needs to be destroyed. For all it’s flaws that is what The Last Voyage of the Demeter did right.
If you like the Dracula book you will like the mustache.

Last Voyage was also excellent.
I don't like the book but I always dug the mustache. I prefer Coppola's insane bombastic movie over the bore that is Stoker's book...

Coppola destroyed Dracula’s character as well as Mina and Jonathan’s relationship.
Orlok is how Dracula should be portrayed.

devilkais In reply to heroesguy [2025-01-13 15:06:40 +0000 UTC]
And yet said "destruction" was far more impactful, inspiring and fun than the mediocre as hell source material. Considering how horribly plain and shallow Jonathan & Mina were in the book, yeah, no big loss...
I'll stick with the Coppola film version if only because it makes me CARE and THINK. And destroy ? I'm sure all the books & other versions didn't vanish upon that movie's release. You may not like what you'll see next...
As for "should be portrayed", you are talking to the wrong guy. I am perfectly fine with alternate takes ESPECIALLY on Dracula and mostly roll my eyes at purism (especially with such lacking origins).
Hell, Frankenstein is one my favorite books and yet, the Karloff film is still pretty good.
But for Dracula, well its legacy is far more interesting than the novel. WHether it's faithful or not, hardly matters as most of them swing for the fences. YOU want the subhuman plague monster, you've got Orlok. I love the arch aristocrat, the lurid hedonist of the demonic anomaly ? Then I got Lugosi's, Coppola's and Castlevania.
