Desperado's Aviva
Desperado signed Aviva up for two classes at the prestigious Battle in the Saddle competition. Desperado Co-Owner, Jo Harding, knew this would be a show unlike any other Aviva has experienced and so everyone pitched in to ensure the little champagne mare was in perfect condition, mind and body, to take on the challenges that laid ahead. The classes that the ranch were entering were Barrel Racing and the infamous Ranch Remuda Challenge.

Jo had little worries about the Barrel Racing event. Aviva turns on a dime - with grace to boost - and had won blue ribbons in the past for it. However, the Ranch Remuda Challenge was another story... although the mare had dabbled in the art of reining for the pleasure of the staff and would respond to the lightest twitch of the leg... she was never formally shown in a reining class before and that was one third of the challenge. To debut in reining at one of the most important events in the western world? Insane. The blame was immediately placed on the shoulders of the guilty party, none other than the youngest sibling - Jedidiah Marshall. Jed insisted that the mare had a gift and would be more than ready by the the time the show took place, many months away, in September... challenge, begrudgingly, accepted.

The staff and Aviva trained daily, perfecting the reining maneuvers and reinforcing Aviva's innate cowsense that had already served Desperado Ranch so well. The mare, Desperado's savior and only hope, was pampered after each session and given lots of praise. Staff would pass each other and joke about what a piece of cake BITS will be and then swagger away... but then retire at night and pray for success. The ranch's future, quite literally, depended on it.

When it came time to perform, Jo had to do some deep breathing to keep the jitters down. She mentally scolded herself: This was so unlike her, but Jo hadn't entered a show quite of this caliber yet either. This was a huge opportunity. The woman absentmindedly adjusted her black cowgirl hat and stroked Aviva's pale golden pelt - not only to comfort the uncertain mare, but herself. The Quarter Horse's well-developed muscles tremored under the touch and Viva turned her lovely head to get a better look at her handler, so now the duo were face-to-face. As Jo watched her reflection in pale azure eyes, a moment of silent understanding passed between them and confidence began to swell in Jo's chest. They had this in the bag. They did from the start. The handler could not hide her smirk as she swung her leg over the saddle and the pair loped into the arena. It was time.
