Playing around with a visual style for an elementary onscreen keyboard.inb4 "what's up with the super key?"
It's so you can do Bold, Italic, etc for rich text capable entries and also for those of us that use languages with special chars, it works as a compose key.

I know I have said this before, but I just can't use a touch keyboard with no numbers row. Maybe an option could be added.

Not sure...sorry for sounding moody in that post, I just didn't know how to word it well. Maybe you could extend the return key into the right shift key, in order for it to have more room like how some of the old keyboards were. Also, two number buttons probably aren't necessary either. Maybe replace the left one with a tab button for indentations?

I think holding down the top row of keys would let you insert numbers, Q = 1, W = 2 etc. Many soft keyboards already do this, and it's a lot easier than going to and from different views...

Thinking about it, you dont need a super key at all, as all the special characters can be accesed by holding down their corresponding key. For example holding down "A" would give you a popover with the options of ÁÄÀÅ and maybe even @

That's exactly why DanRabbit is including the super key. Holding a key takes time and therefore slows down fast typing.

this looks great! i love all of the things i can do with my windows 7 tablet, but its keyboard is very cluttered and can be difficult. simple and large is a good direction.

It would be nice if the apple command key which you have there had the Elementary logo instead

As I commented below, I don't want to make the same mistake as MS and over brand things. I'd rather use a more platform-agnostic symbol. But additionally, having an extra 'e' on the keyboard could be really confusing.

It's not confusing to have a symbol of your OS on the super key. In fact, that's what we've come to expect, no? People coming from Windows will instantly recognize it as the equivalent of the "Windows key". Meanwhile, your weird symbol doesn't make sense to anyone that's not familiar with OSX, and to those who are it will look as yet another thing you've copied from Apple.
Really, Dan. Sometimes it looks like you just want to do whatever Apple is doing. I hope this has the same fate as the old Midori icon.

However please try to come up with an alternative to the Apple "Super" key. It may be better than using a Windows logo or an elementary logo, however it will force elementary even more into that "copied Mac" label that people seem so keen to give us. Don't give them the satisfaction.

Meh, I don't really care what those people think. It's platform agnostic, it's more recognizeable than some other obscure symbol, and there's nothing particularly wrong with it. There's no reason to be different just to be different.

The problem is that the function of the key is the exact opposite of "standard state". It's a modifier key, which puts the recipient key in an altered state.

This isn't really an attempt at establishing a third standard, but rather of adopting the current standard of using the OS logo. What you are trying to do is pairing with Apple on a second unnecessary standard.
Now think about it: Apple's slogan is "Think Different", it makes sense for them to use a fancy symbol, but for elementary? Not only it wouldn't align with the philosophy of doing what's best, but worse, it would be harming the project's identity.

it's never been about always going our own way. In fact we "side" with a lot of different people. We side with Apple on WebKit. We side with Canonical on Indicators. We side with the Linux kernel, with GTK+, Vala, etc. In the same way that the whole of the internet sides with HTML and CSS.
It's always best to work towards a standard where possible, imho.

It looks good but you should consider implementing some of the features of the swype-keyboard (not the swiping-feature but more the ease of access of other characters and such). [link]

Well for example, it doesn't require you to open another view by pressing the ".?123". Instead it provides many of the special characters by holding the button down a bit longer. In the screenshot I posted earlier you can see what character would be inserted on a long press. Many times you just want to insert a colon or something and it's much more effective to just hold a button down a bit longer then switching view and try to find the character, since you already can see the location of it. The swype-keyboard also includes these extra buttons from an extra view but also provides shortcuts. That's basically what I meant

I dont see anything different, i think it to high an d the lack of number keys would drive me crazy. the smal enter/return key is also crap and could be bigger (like this [link] ) theres also no need for 2 ".?123"-key either move the command-key to the right side or move the language-key to the left.
Also the line going though "y", "r", "d" etc. is pretty annoying.
