The sword, traditionally, is both an instrument of death, and the means to spare lives. It can be used for great evil, or achieve the defeat of same. The spirit, being like the sword, can be used for the same purpose, the same reason.
The phrase "Ken Shin Ichi Nyo" is very layered in form. It admonishes the student of the sword to know the sword like his or her own spirit... make it a part of them... But also, it warns them that they should have a very good reason (intent) for drawing out the sword(spirit)... committing oneself to action, putting one's entire spirit behind that action. The kanji can also be interpreted to be "the body and mind are as one" or "the sword and the heart are as one" or any of those combinations.
To achieve great evil, or defeat the same, the spirit is all that is required. The sword is simply a symbol, a means to learn true compassion for others, understanding for oneself, and clarity of purpose.
I have the strongest weapon in the Universe, given to me by my Creator, and which can never be taken without my permission... my spirit. It is sharper than any sword, stronger than any armor. And the more I learn about it, the less I know...
