whilst looking at what i've been submitting ... i see people.people of priviledge -- albeit talented -- but of priviledge nonetheless.
they are pretty.
they are interesting.
but ... whilst walking from a parking garage to an assignment at the santa barbara international film festival ...
this guy caught my eye.
i stood there drinking my water.
and he says, "you wanna photograph jesus?"
"i already have."
he looks at me quizzically ...
"what do you mean?"
"i try to see what jesus meant and is and was ... in everyone i meet, bro."
i gave them $5.00.
i pick and choose the people on the street whom i give money.
there was something that was tangible about this group of guys.
yeah, they'll spend it on something other than getting their lives together.
whatever.
not really my problem.
but ... they're human.
just like george.

and ... you can make beautiful photographs ...
it doesn't matter of whom.
just ... the human condition.
whether it's backstage at some crazy super-exclusive event...
of your family ...
of someone on the street ...
because ...
they're all family.

This is one idea I've heard quite a number of times: if someone asks you for five bucks to buy a meal, don't give them the cash. Take them (if they will come) to the nearest restaraunt and treat them to a meal ersonally. It makes a great witnessing opportunity.

Man, you've probably heard this a gazillion of times, but your way of telling so simple yet true and impressing stories about people is amazing. As if the photography wouldn't tell the story itself, your explanations are probably the most sincere I've ever read.

I walk a half an hour to my college each day, and I have to walk over a freeway, which always has five or so bums staking out all the stop-lights. I do what I can, which is mainly donate the occasional cigarette and talk to them while I wait. I rarely have money, unless it's for lunch.
This picture made me cry.
It's hard to think of how often this group of people is ostracised because it's easier to turn your head rather than allow yourself to believe they're human too.

indeed ... they are humans as well .. and mostly ... the best thing we could, in fact, give them is some of our time. perhaps something we say will "connect" and they'll see it differently and do something different with their lives.
