Description Oh look, it's the center of the universe!

"Thor and Woden?... Fairy stories! I am Ziggerastica, the Living God!"
-Cressida Cowell, "How to Speak Dragonese"

Mostly posted because I'm sick of fighting with it. XP

Can't say I've ever drawn fingernail-gunk or blood-vessels before...

This was a fun study, if nothing else. XD

Ziggerastica's quite the inspiring fellow- I might play around with some other doodles/designs later...

BLEH.

I just figured I oughta finish something. XD

I think the movie gets WAY to much recognition and its kinda stamped out the books a bit.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Crownflame In reply to Darren-Shan-07 [2010-12-30 18:03:18 +0000 UTC]

I completely agree. You can't even FIND the books in stores- they're like, hidden in corners.

Although, Cowell is all over in the DVDs, so they really DO acknowledge their existence, at least artistically.

But yeah, they could've done better. Some movies actually go out of their way to get the book sold too, and this one definitely hasn't done that.

And that's sad, because I completely believe every child should be exposed to those books. I'm a huge English buff now, and I STILL use the deep, no-nonsense lessons taught in those things all the time.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Darren-Shan-07 In reply to Crownflame [2011-01-01 13:29:23 +0000 UTC]

It just annoys me that people think they are such massive fans just because they went to see the movie and they think they know everything about it and they dont, they cant be bothered to read the books, its so stupid.

Once I was talking to this user on DA, and they were ranting on about this picture of the Movie Toothless they had posted up, and how they were such a massive fan and everything, and I was like 'Thats not Toothless, have you even read the books?' and they said 'Books? I didnt even know they were books. You mean the movie book, right?'

Sheesh.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Crownflame In reply to Darren-Shan-07 [2011-01-01 18:06:06 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I totally know what you mean. I've drawn quite a few pieces for the books, and people will be like "Aww, is that a tiny dragon on Hiccup's backpack?"

It's Toothless.

I also had a hilarious confrontation with some people who thought "OMG, TOOTHLESS COULD BE FEMALE BECAUSE THE MOVIE DIDN'T SAY." And I was like... in the books, he hits on female dragons, so...

It's sad actually, since I read the original title back when I was twelve, and it's disappointing how obscure it remains, given it had a giant impact on my childhood. (Sadly, I didn't realize the sequels existed until quite recently, but once I learned, I promptly read them all and poured more into my pool of inspiration).

It always says "based on a book by" in the credits. If I like a movie, I always look for that. If they don't know about the book, they're obviously not OMG HARDCORE fans, since they didn't even watch the IN-DVD MATERIAL, which has Cowell cameos all over the place.

Honestly, though, I adore both. I think reading the books has made me appreciate everything they managed to cram together to make that movie. Even though it had a unique story, it was made from bits and pieces of an entire series, and it's undeniably an incredible piece of work. You'd think this would attract interest toward the books. It should.

People don't read. It's too hard. Pffff...

Darren-Shan-07 In reply to Crownflame [2011-01-02 16:01:49 +0000 UTC]

Did you know they're releasing a sequel to the movie in 2013 and they're thinking of creating an online virtual HTTYD world? Also in 2012 they are doing a TV series of the moive on Cartoon Network. I think thats a bit...well. Milking it really...

And, really? Toothless is obviously a boy, right? They would know if they had read the books. He has a crush on the Stormfly, for gods sake...and me too, I always look for the 'based on the books by...'

When I went to see The Vampires Assistant, I discovered the books by Darren Shan, and fell in love with them. And when I went to see The Secret Of Moonacre, its based on a book called The Little White Horse, which is just an amazing and beautiful book.

But thats the thing - its BASED on the books, it's not a movie replica of it, they're different things and I respect this. Its just its so annoying that people think they are such massive fans and they havent even HEARD of the books yet.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Crownflame In reply to Darren-Shan-07 [2011-01-02 20:02:26 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I did hear about all that. I think it's all going to be full of fail and AIDS, especially given the way they ended the first movie. It was a complete story, and doesn't really warrant a sequel.

Then again, I didn't realize that the book had (or needed) a sequel, either.

But those TV series never work. Jimmy Neutron. Penguins of Madagascar. Cheap, throw-away 3d animation and stale jokeage. This will PROBABLY end up the same way. (A la Boneknapper, undoubtedly.) Though I'll be interested if the writers show some inkling of taking inspiration from the books (TONS of information to draw from, after all).

If it's going to be a cash-cow, at least market the books as well. Sheesh.

But yeah, I'm really worried about all that. I mean, I won't mind if it's artistically sound and well-done stuff, but I'm so worried that it will forgo that. I always forget that the fandom is targeted toward 10 year olds, and not young adults like me. XDXD So the quality likely will suffer.

Yeah, these chicks HAD NO IDEA a book existed. Sigh. WATCH THE DVD FEATURES AND LEARN, DAMMIT. Even the art book includes references and even art from Cowell. There's no excuse if you're a HARDCORE FAYUN!!!!1!!!

I think if they read the books, they'd appreciate the movie all the more. I know I do. It's the most expert complete transformation I've ever seen, and I wasn't expecting to even enjoy it, being a COMPLETE book-loyal Nazi. XDXD

It's sad.

Darren-Shan-07 In reply to Crownflame [2011-01-03 18:19:18 +0000 UTC]

It is. I just saw (wont mention any names) this person upload a deviation with a picture of Movie Toothless on, and they gave credit like this:

How To Train Your Dragon, Toothless, Night Fury Β© Dreamworks

I was so mad, I actually posted to tell them the credits belonged half to Cressida Cowell, and they had no idea that the books existed.

I think the series wont go down well. It will be old by then, I dont think many people will bother after a while. And like you said, the books etc are aimed at 10 year olds but I still love them. I've bought and read all 8. All the new copies have a sticker on them that says:

READ THE BOOKS BEFORE YOU SEE THE MOVIE!

Which is very true.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Crownflame In reply to Darren-Shan-07 [2011-01-03 21:48:03 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, sadly I see that all the time (technically, though, I could see that that VERSION of Toothless, i.e. the Night Fury is property of Dreamworks, specifically Chris Sanders). Still. XP

I think the series will not be a great artistic achievement, but will do all too well by catering to the kids who are too young to realize it's hackneyed crap. What they should do is consider it as an all-ages thing and keep the quality up (which may happen, at least as far as the movies, if the original directors stay on). I think it's just a question of how well it's dealt with, and judging from the past, it probably won't be well.

I love them more now than I would've ages ago. They're DEEP. Like, I'm a literature buff, and HTTYD is and probably will always be up there in my favorite books, just because it delivers so much heavy stuff under the light-hearted guise of a children's melodrama.

BUT READING IS TOO HARD BAWWW.
Especially when it's like, 213 pages of large, excessively capitalized text and PICTURES. 9.9;

Its just like when they *ucked up the Eragon movie. Such a shame, the books were such gems of genius, however geeky that phrase sounds. Although Christopher Paolini has taken over a year to write the next book...hmm...
