Codex Entry - Melinda Crane/Mindy Marvel

Born to a middle class Irish Catholic family in Ocean Gate, Melinda Crane's parents instilled a strong work ethic and a desire to help those less fortunate in her. This helped her throughout her youth as she excelled both in sports and school, eventually earning a combined academic and athletic scholarship to attend Steel Canyon University in Paragon City. It was there where she met John Crane, a starting linebacker on the football team and computer science major. The two hit it off immediately during Freshman Orientation and were inseparable from that day on. Melinda showed her prowess in the classroom by making the Dean's List just about every semester, while she also achieved success on the basketball court, earning the team's starting point guard role midway through her freshman season. She eventually graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Political Science and was working towards her Master's when she started getting severe headaches, bouts of physical pain, and seizures. In hopes of finding a diagnosis, Melinda went to the University Hospital in Steel Canyon and underwent various tests, including an MRI. The day of the MRI, the hospital had just installed a tesla generator, a new technology developed by Tesla Tech's Natalie Morris and Kristen Andersson, which harnessed the electrical energy of lighting to power the building and city. When the machine was turned on during the MRI, Melinda started feeling the same symptoms she had before and her body began to glow with a bluish aura. She started to scream as the pain she was experiencing reached un bearable levels, right until the equivalent of a lightning bolt struck down through the machine and into her body. The exam room and the MRI machine were obliterated, but Melinda somehow miraculously survived without a scratch and her unconscious body was found in a large crater in the center of the room.

Melinda later woke up in a hospital bed and discovered that she was no longer experiencing her previous symptoms. In the following days, Melinda found that her body had changed in amazing ways, increasing her strength to superhuman levels, while also granting her the gift of flight. The most interesting thing though was that she had gained the ability to discharge electrical energy in various forms, including devestating lightning blasts from her eyes and hands. She spent several months honing these newfound skills while also discovering new ones, like the ability to tap into bio-electrical fields to read the surface thoughts of those around her, in addition to being able to generate electrical force fields around herself and others. After some soul searching and a talk with her boyfriend John, she decided to take up a costumed persona and joined Paragon City's heroes as the lightning wielding Mindy Marvel. John and Melinda married shortly after, and that fall they moved to Steel City, where Melinda began to pursue a legal degree at Steel City University. Steel City was not nearly as popular as Paragon City when it camed to costumed heroes and villains, so Melinda's presence as Mindy Marvel went largely unnoticed, though she had also curtailed her activities a bit to focus on her legal career, while also participating in a high level amatuer intramural basketball league. Despite relaxing a bit, she did enjoy brief patrols as her alter ego, and during one of these patrols she crossed paths with the city's most well known heroine, the Crimson Dynamo. Crimson was on the run from powerful cyborgs sent to capture her by the city's most nefarious villain, Doctor Kotetsu. Melinda had heard of Kotetsu while he had spent time in Paragon City, but had never dealt with his cybernetic creations before.

She rendered aid to Crimson and helped her destroy the cyborgs that were after her, which led Crimson to welcoming Mindy to town, the young heroine providing her new friend with a special communications unit that she could use to contact her whenever she needed to. Melinda would put that comm unit to use a few evenings later when she herself was hunted down by Kotetsu's cyborgs. Though she fared well initially, Kotetsu had studied her powers from the brief encounter with his machines and determined that she could be slowed down if affected by an electromagnetic pulse. His cyborgs were equipped with EMP pulse lasers and used them to slowly wear Mindy down until they were able to render her unconscious. She woke up later restrained in power shackles in one of Kotetsu's run down labs, the nefarious villain intent on experimenting on her to find out how her powers worked. Thankfully she had managed to send out a call for help before she had fallen unconscious, and the Crimson Dynamo came to her rescue, the two of them narrowly defeating Kotetsu before they made their escape. Complaining about her ruined costume while remarking that Crimson didn't seem to have a scratch on her from the battle, Mindy was referred to a scientist named Tiffany Anderson, who Crimson stated had helped her develop her nigh indestructible body suit. Feeling a bit hesitant, Mindy took Crimson up on the offer and met Tiffany at her lab one night. Still feeling a bit jittery after her capture by Kotetsu, she used her ability to read bio-electric energy and scanned Tiffany's surface thoughts, discovering that the scientist was thinking about how humorous it was that Mindy didn't know she was actually Crimson. This calmed Mindy down a bit, and she allowed Tiffany to take her measurements before picking out a style for her new costume.

After returning home that evening Mindy couldn't help but feel a bit guilty that she had discovered Crimson's secret identity, and after a long talk with her husband decided that she would put her trust in Tiffany and reveal her own secret. She returned to Tiffnay's lab as Melinda Crane, and when Tiffany seemed a bit letdown that Mindy wasn't coming in person, Melinda pulled open her buttoned up dress shirt to reveal her Mindy Marvel costume worn beneath it. Upon discovering one another's secret identities, Melinda and Tiffany became fast friends and developed a close sisterly relationship. They became an effective crime fighting duo, combining Crimson's technical know-how and gadgets with Mindy's incredible powers and brute strength. Eventually Melinda graduated from law school and bid a sad farewell to her close friend as she moved to Angel Falls to begin her legal career. The two stayed in close contact and Tiffany continued to help Mindy with bits and pieces of her costume, developing a special utility belt for her with batteries built into it so she could recharge her powers in an emergency. Melinda in turn handled most of Tiffany's legal work, including her real estate acquisitions and legal matters that pertained to her scientific patents and intellectual property. During her time in Angel Falls, Melinda experienced several major life events, including running for mayor and the adoption of her daughter Cecilia. During this time she also became a mentor for younger heroes, and survived an assassination attempt during her second and successful run for Mayor. Throughout these events she and Tiffany remained close and visited one another several times each year, though Melinda faced a heartbreaking time in her life when it appeared that Doctor Kotetsu had managed to successfully kill the Crimson Dynamo during a hostage crisis.

Melinda mourned the loss of Tiffany with several of her other close friends and allies, including Emma Sapphire, Bethany Hunter, and Katherine Barton, otherwise known as the Shadow Samurai, Nocturne, and the lady thief Orchid, but reluctantly returned to her own life a few days later. Despite this, Melinda was in for a shock when she later discovered that she was pregnant. This revelation caused her to resign from office, and she later gave birthy to a beautiful baby boy. Seeking a new start and a place away from the public spotlight, Melinda and her family moved to Dream Haven, where she started her own law firm. She got her second major surprise when she, Emma Sapphire, and Bethany Hunter were all summoned to the magical realm of Asgard in their super heroic identities. There they were confronted by the Asgardian goddess Freyja, who revealed that they had all been chosen to witness the arrival of her new herald to Earth. A few minutes later she revealed that Tiffany was indeed alive, and had been reborn as the Crimson Valkyrie. After the initial shock wore off, Melinda was excited to have her "sister" back in her life and a few days after arriving back on Earth, Tiffnay came to visit her in Dream Haven so that she could meet her family. During this visit, Melinda's evil cousin Potentia attacked the city and waged a pitched battle against Mindy Marvel and Crimson Valkyrie. Using her superior strength and dark magical abilities, Potentia was able to ensnare Mindy in one of her fear traps and then systematically beat down Crimson until she was on the ropes. Crimson was aided by the timely arrival of Dream Haven's heroine Dark Siren, and together the two were able to distract Potetnia long enough for Mindy to recover and escape having her greatest fears used against her.

While stuck in Potentia's mind trap, Melinda had an out of body experience, where her soul was pulled away to a magical realm, where she met what appeared to be a vision of her grandmother. Superheroics and abilities had long run in Melinda's family tree and her grandmother revealed that she had once been Mystic Margaret, a powerful weilder of magical light. She bestowed her ancient Rings of Abbridon upon Melinda, granting her access to magical powers. When Mindy escaped Potentia's trap, she was able to use this newfound power to defeat Potentia. The rings would also come in handy later on when Melinda accompanied Tiffany to Asgard to help stop the dark sorceress Mallarra from taking over Asgard. Things mostly returned to normal for Melinda after Potentia was defeated, though the super villainess escaped from prison and continued to be a thorn in her side from time to time. Eventually Melinda discovered that her niece had super powers of her own, and she took the young "Tessa Terrific" under her wing, showing her the ropes of being a hero, while also bringing Tiffany onboard to help design a special costume that could stand up to the use of Tessa's powers. Melinda spent most of her time running her legal practice, while adventuring and patrolling on the side with Tessa, though fate would once again intervene and draw her into a larger conflict when she travelled to Asgard with Tiffany and several other super heroes to investigate why Tiffany had suddenly lost contact with her Asgardian family. The events of War in Asgard soon followed, and Mindy Marvel showed her might and metal as she assisted the realm of Asgard and was later honored by being named an honorary Valkyrie.
