Description
‘Yes.’ Linda grumbled as she opened the door a crack. The persistent knocking had finally driven her to slip on a bathrobe and seek out the source of the racket. Peeking thought the slit she had kept the deadbolt chain firmly in place and was prepared to slam the door shut in a moments notice.‘Ms. Linda White.’ The man on the other side of the door spoke, it was not a question. Linda’s fingers tightened around the door, before she could close it though he continued. ‘I’m with the Governmental burrow of En-
‘Oh God.’ Linda groaned, her shoulder slumping. ‘You people again.’
‘Now mam-‘
‘No I am not interested in undergoing another set of treatments.’ Linda cut him off again. ‘No I am not interested in going back, and no, I am not going to open the matter for discussion.’
She was on the verge of slamming the door again when he cut in again, all formality dropped as he called out.
‘Mam, you misunderstand – I was just sent to deliver a message!’
That gave Linda pause, several black and white features of New York gangsters flashed in rapped fire through her mind. Her free hand, moved to her cell phone, only to realize she had left it in her bedroom when she had gone to answer the door. Cursing herself, she let out a sigh.
‘A phone call, a letter, any of these would have sufficed.’
The man on the other side fidgeted with his sleeve, nervous fingers tugging at the white shirt underneath. ‘Yes, mam. You see we tried to contact you. But we never got a response back.’
Biting back a sarcastic remark, a few pieces fell into place. Over the last few months she had been getting letter from the GBE, that number had spiked in the last week. She had promptly shredded them, not bothering to open any of them, regardless of the stamps they bore. ‘Highly important’ and ‘Open immediately’ all had met the same fate in the mini shredder she had purchased. There was something cathartically satisfying about shredding the documents from that organization that made her smile.
Still, they had not stopped there, her phone had been beseeched by constant unknown numbers, until she had finally thrown away her old one purchased a new model, and, changed her number. That had helped in the short run, but she still had to block multiple numbers and play complete ignorance of anyone who called looking for her.
Of all the abilities to inherit, mine had to be the panda Linda groaned.
Emails were a little easier to deal with, she had created a spam account and simply never bothered to open it. Her real email had held up a little longer, but like all things that dwell on the internet once one person discovered who she was, she had to get a new one. Blocking unwanted emails was the equivalent of trying to stop a flood with an eye dropper, for everyone she would block a few hundred more seemed to surface. Some of those had probably been from the GBE, she had never bothered to read them, just blocked and moved on.
And now, they had finally sent someone in person to deal with her.
Letting out a deep sigh of resignation Linda tightened her bathrobe and fixed her green eyes on the man. ‘What can I do for you.’
‘May I come in?’ He asked, hand still tugging at his sleeve.
It was an innocent enough request, but two years dealing with the public at large had taught her the dangers of letting strangers into one’s home, regardless of their credentials.
‘We can talk here.’
A bit taken aback, the man rocked backwards onto his heals, clearly not expecting that response.
‘Yes, well – yes.’ He stuttered. ‘You see, I was sent her to deliver this.’
From his pocket the man withdrew an orange envelope with several governmental seals decorating it.
‘Great.’ Linda muttered, her eyes flicking over the familiar words, Classified, sensitive, priority. The government loved to use those in almost everything it dealt in. ‘And this is?’
‘Well mam, you see – there was a recent discovery regarding your treatment and exposure in regards to the GBE program.’
That caught Linda’s attention, her eyes flared, even as she tried to hide her sudden interest. The man, it appeared did not notice but continued on, pulling out several pages of lengthy texts from the envelope.
‘You see, we recently discovered a clerical error. The, SI34-7445, the ‘Hero Program’ strain if you would, was administered to you and several others on-‘
‘Please.’ Linda let out another sigh. ‘Get to the point.’
Taking a moment to recover, the man shuffled the paperwork, clearly not used to someone interrupting his findings.
‘Yes, well, you see – while your colleagues were exposed to strain SI34-7445, it seems there was a mistake and you were exposed to strain SI34-7448. A simple mist…’
What he said next rolled over Linda in a haze of nondescript noises, her brain processing the new information that had just been presented to her.
‘…You mean.’ She began slowly. ‘That all this. Her hand moved down to take in her fur covered body. ‘And this.’ Her hand came up to rest upon her chest. ‘All this. Was due to a ‘clerical error?’
‘Um…yes.’
Time drifted out of focus.
Linda did not remember sinking to the floor, or propping her back against the now closed wooden door that she rested against. The world had just shattered around her and her mind could only register one fact.
An accident.
A clerical error. That is what had destroyed her life, changed everything. And while her friends had gone off to become legends, she had been quietly sent to work at a dinner as a server. Her heart was beating unnaturally fast in her chest, she felt sick.
An error.
Fleeing from the door she sprinted across the short distance to the bathroom, falling to her knees and retched. Her hand gripping the porcelain edges of the bowl as she heaved again. Her stomach rebelling, knotting, and twisting at the sudden news.
It had all been a mistake, she, she could have been –
She retched again.
Two years.
Tears welled in her eyes, as she crawled away blindly, her shoulder touching the edge of her bed, she pulled her knees up. Black furred stockings rising to meet her black and white face. It was all a mistake. A mistake.
A mistake.
Quietly, Linda wrapped her arms around herself and wept.

So, now I want to know MORE about Linda's backstory. Was she human and turned into a panda or a panda the was anthropomorphised into a humanoid panda?

Ah, Linda's history is one even she is not prone to talk about. Most of the world thinks that she simple exists as a anthropomorphic panda and has existed that way. The truth is a little more convoluted.
So for the record:
Linda started off human. She and several other friends submitted to a government program designed to promote a random mutation, aka try and create Super Heros or some sort of which. That, and participants were guarantied government employment. Mostly the results have been randomized, a few people got powers, but most got limited powers that were deemed useless.
Of the volunteers Linda was mistakenly exposed to a different serum that resulted in her current form.
Being deemed a failed experiment with no useful powers she was sent off to work at a government owned restaurant chain. Thus began her carrier as a waitress/barista, a nightmare job for her that she did not like what so ever. It was during these stressful days that she learned about her second/latent super power. That being, stress or strong emotions causes her chest to swell uncontrollably. This has led to a lot of embarrassing and uncomfortable situations.
Finally getting so out of control, and with the media catching wind of her 'condition', declaring her to be the 'Dairy Queen' a name she hates. Not to mention the sudden inflow of customers to the dinner who wanted nothing more to do than cause her stress as to watch her blow up.
So, in an act of desperation, she agreed to go back for a second round of experimentation with the explicit agreement that any tests would be to prevent her expansion problem. The catch being, that this was a voluntary testing and would nullify her current standing contract with the government.
The testing worked, sort of. Her breast expansion issue was solved and prevented. But, it also left her shrunk less than two inches tall. And sense her contract with the government was no longer valid, the government did not see fit to try and find employment for a two inch panda.
One clear plastic cup, a sheet of paper, and a lot of screaming on Linda's part she was thrown out of the government building. That did not stop her from throwing herself against the glass doors, and yelling at them to fix what they did to her. This went of for five plus days, until one of the employees there took pity on the tiny panda sleeping under a used gum wrapper and decided to pull what political clot he had to get her a temporary job as a dental assistant.
This was a good turn for her, as she now employment and funds coming in again. That and she was even got set up with a room mate with a nearby collage, though their relationship proved to not be the best. But it was a roof over her head, and food on the table. Some patience even thought a tiny dental panda was a really cute idea, others thought it was just a little weird.
But like all good things this employment only lasted six months, and was called into the office and terminated.
So, suddenly without a job, a room mate that was more concerned with Linda paying her part of the rent than with the little panda's well being. And, so packing up her meager belongings Linda was on the verge of having an emotional break down when a phone call came for her. As it turned out a company in Japan had heard about her, and, wanted to offer her employment and a possible cure to her many issues.
One, one way ticket to Japan, a nightmare encounter with airport security, and a lot of help getting onto the plane, Linda was on her way.
This is where she began her carrier as a Tea Cup Panda, much like one of the more popular diners were introverts can go to have someone talk with them, the idea of having a tiny panda in one's tea cup while one dines was quite popular. There were a few drawbacks to the job, such as being so extra care had to be taken as to not cause her harm. And then there was the issue of accidentally being swallowed, that happened just enough to cause Linda to have serious nightmares.
However, good to their word, and with Japanese innovation a serum was developed that allowed Linda to revert back to her normal size or be reduced back to a Tea Cup size. The only problem being when she is at her regular size she still suffers from the same stress issues as before.
She still works as a Tea Cup Panda, but she also works at a natural day spa.
Currently she is still trying to sort out all the details of her life, but her overall life conditions have improved dramatically.
Fweew. That's a lot, but that's Linda's history in a nut shell. ^^

Linda is quiet for a while, slowly her body stops shaking and with an effort she manages to dry her eyes. 'I'm sorry - I, it was just some stupid silly bit of...Never mind, it's not important.'
Slowly rising, she dusts herself off. Then hesitates as she realizes that she is still in the nude. Her face burning a sudden scarlet.

Not many I would hope, as it was an experimental serum, and given all the negative publicity Linda has attracted it is likely that they will bury that one and claim ignorance.

What can go wrong.......will go wrong......and it will be far worse than your worst expectations.

Her chest randomly growing in size, was a result of an error?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Code-Shark In reply to LARS777 [2018-11-26 17:48:02 +0000 UTC]
Yes and no, her growth is directly proportionate to her stress levels, or in some cases extreme emotions. Technically, her pandafication was the error, as she was supposed to receive a strain resulting in a random super power. Alas, her chest growth was a random side effect, or, so she was told. She now is having some serious doubts about the whole experience.
Especially now that they are dangling a potential cure to her panda problem before her.

Yes, she has had quite the tough time of it, in brief - waitress duties, chest issues, shrunk to under two inches tall, shipped to another country, later returned to her normal size, and now seems to drift in between being a Tea Cup Panda and regular sized panda. All thoughts of being human again left a while ago.
Best not to bring it up.
Though she can be caught looking longingly into a mirror on rare occasions, or touching her face, running her and over her now blunted nose. It is the little signs that she is thinking and remembering what was.

I have thought about it, and do have a character in mind of what she would look like as before. There is just one major problem, that being that it would be like looking at the face under Boba Fett's mask, and some of the mystery would be lost lessening her character. So, for now, her panda form is the only face she has for now.
