Description

Trisha looked about the neighborhood as she took a box from the back of the moving truck. It looked quiet enough, and it was nice to be out of the city, Rachel had been right about that. Still, she couldn’t help but shake the feeling of eyes on her. It felt like she was, exposed, uncomfortably so.

Turning her head she looked to the house on her left, where an elderly man was busying himself pruning a rose bush and staring at her as though she were the antichrist made manifest. Not wanting to make a bad first impression Trisha put on her best smile and tried to give a little wave, forgetting momentarily that her hands were full.

One brief awkward dance later she recovered herself and returned her attention to the old man, who has given up pruning the bush and was now waving the hedge clippers at her menacingly and half shouting, half muttering something under his breath. She only caught one word in three and even then, it didn’t make any sense.

“Spotted she devil… harlots taking over the neighborhood! And, another one!”

Her smile faltering, she watched as the man retreated inside, pausing every other pace to look over his shoulder and wave the shears at her. At the threshold he held up his hand and shouted another string of nonsense at her:

“And stay away from my pumpkins if you know what is good for you!”

Trisha’s mouth opened, closed, opened again, but no words would come out. Briefly she considered dropping the package just in case the old man came back with a shotgun or something.

“Just my luck, I get stuck in the house with a crazy person living next door.” Trisha shook her head and began to move up the walkway, trying to juggle the box in her arms and fish the keys out of her pocket at the same time. “Just my wonderful – luck.”

At the door she looked right, in the brief exchange she had almost forgotten to examine the house to the left of her new home. Knowing my luck, they will be just as bad.

Still as she turned her head, she only caught a swish of curtains, had someone been there a moment before? Or was that just the wind?
