Max Wellington was a scientist in the distant future. He had just invented the portal machine. The machine, if given the proper multidimensional coordinates, could create portals to other dimensions thus giving him access to the entire universe. Perhaps he should not have counted his chickens before they hatched but he was so far in the future that he did not even know what a chicken was.
Punching a few buttons on the machine, Max created a portal to a universe he thought was similar to his own. Then he stuck his hand inside the portal. On the other side was the hand of Maxine Wellington, a scientist of equal intelligence who considered herself just as real as he was. She knew if he pulled his hand out again she would lose her existence so she pulled the whole arm inside.
Although caught off guard, Max still had most of his body outside the portal. It took an effort but he managed to pull his arm back out. Most people would have been grateful to have survived such an encounter and stopped the experiment, but Max stuck his hand inside the portal again to learn the results. Maxine once again had existence and she was determined not to let it end. She felt her own computer and pushed some buttons. Even though she could not see the controls, the feel of them was enough.
When Max pulled his arm out again, the arm remained Maxine. She pushed some buttons on the computer in that universe before Max could stop her. For a moment there was peace between them. She was satisfied with her work and he did not try to reverse it.
Then he stuck his arm inside the machine a third time. To his surprise, his arm once again became Max like the rest of him. He put a leg inside. Nothing happened. Then he moved inside with his entire body.
Looking around at the strangely colored computer equipment, Max realized he was in a universe much like his own yet very different. He observed his surroundings for a few minutes and decided to take in all the sights and sounds. The entire universe was too uncanny valley for him so he decided to head back. However, when he went through the portal again it was Maxine who emerged on the other side.
Maxine Wellington smiled with delight. Her gamble had paid off. She had reversed the effects of the portal and he did not even notice.
Maxine pushed a few buttons so the change would not happen at all. Then she put an arm inside the portal, then a leg, and then her entire body. She remained as she was. She could travel back and forth through the portal at will. Maxine had won the battle of existence.
