Description WARNING: Minor blood, and explosions I guess?

The party was in full swing by evening. Gros from every corner of Wynsiph had slowly tricked in since noon and it was now officially underway with games and food and the pretty lights of multicoloured magic.

So many Wyngrew that Wish wasn’t sure that even with three egg to celebrate that they were all family friends. Not that he minded of course. Such events were nice for making new ones.

And as he’d learnt over the years raising 5 kids, was good for making connections for the future too. Who had kids that will be the same age for his to grow up with and so on.

Although – the exception broke into his line of thoughts once again – he couldn’t exactly apply the same logic with this one. It was a learning curve; one he was all too happy to take on. Maybe he’ll look into who knew water magic should an emergency occur-

Comet bumped his shoulder then, lightly, in that way when she knew he was getting too much into his own head. He flashed her a soft smile and pulled his head back into the moment. It was a party after all.

He gathered up a good portion of the prepared food to cook and crossed the grassy yard as a pair of Wyngrew zipped by his path. A young blue fella with what looked like one of the colouring in sheets to guess the appearance of the kids they were celebrating today, and a rare imp girl yelling after him, also with a colouring sheet in claw. Something about his lack of eye for design?

Wish steadied his feet after the rush and shook his head with a fond smile. Life was wild, life was good.

Everything was going right as planned.

-

Everything was not going right as planned.

Wish had never in his life seen a Runeboo eat so much food. And so quickly too. Right under everyone’s noses!

He’d also never gone so quickly from content to wanting to cry for a somewhat pitiful reason.

No, no he was being silly. There was still a lot of food to cook up. After all they hadn’t known how many would show up to a pouch party times three so they’d bought, well, a lot.  It would just delay the dinner for a while longer but everyone was looking understanding. Actually, most looked like they found the scene funny enough to not be bothered at all. It was already water under the bridge, really.

In fact, Artemis was tugging him up off his knees with a terse, “Come on dad.”

“I know,” he said evenly as he got his wood foot under him to push on the spring and get up again, “Is it so bad I want everything perfect for a member of the family?”

She gave him a flat but understanding look even as she idly crossed her arms, “Yes. Yes, it is if you break your back for it.” His eldest daughter sighed as if breathing the conversation out of mind. Then trotted off back to her light chatter with a grey quad.

“She’s right you know,” Comet said easily sliding into his side, her paws full with several plates off snacks to keep everyone occupied in the meantime. It was a skill honed from years as a waitress at a busy café and it still drew his awed full attention. Or maybe that as just her.

“Besides,” her grin fell a little as nodded off to something over his shoulder.

Ah.

Wish brushed his lips against her cheek in passing as thanks then went to retrieve more platters of food to cook up. He stopped by the downtrodden form sat on the steps.

“You want to help your old man cook up some more?” Wish said with a teasing lilt, “I even heard you passed your fire magic class, bet you can out cook me in no time.”

Ari had sunk into himself with a near hollow look to his eyes at the sight of all the missing food. He’d put a lot into preparing it with his mother and had waited all day to enjoy it.

But, he did perk up a little at his father’s words. Started to push himself up into standing even if he stilled looked unfocused into the distance, “Yeah… okay.” Even if his son wasn’t looking his way, Wish still pushed down the want to smile and rub his hair for the down right pouty tone. It reminded him of when he was small. Gah why must kids grow at the speed of weeds.

They settled down by the grill and Wish showed Ari how to handle the fire for different types of cooking of different food. His boy took to it remarkably quickly for how put out he’d initially been. In no time at all he’d bounced back in that way only the young really seemed to do.

Everything was back on track.

-

Tenga was all about this party business. Granted he didn’t have to do any of the boring snoozefest stuff like figuring out how much plates they needed or whatever. But the key to that, he’d worked out quickly, was to have someone else on the planning party do that part.

The rest, like decorating and setting up a pinata and coming up with party games, yeeeah that was more his style. And to top it off, guaranteed kid entertainment all evening long. The rascals couldn’t get enough of the running around and he didn’t have to stick around with any of their parents engaging in parent talk.

Duh, he wasn’t one yet! They were here at the pouch party so you’d think they’d get that. But no, kept bringing up their kids without the consideration that he couldn’t brag back yet. Well, mostly. He’d been able to go on about how his kid was clearly going to be the strongest. But for some reason most parents didn’t look impressed by that. Kept going on about grades and junk instead.

Whatever. Just they wait!

In the meantime, he was busy with the kids. Integrating with them. If he could go back to thinking like them then understanding what his would need should be a piece of cake.

Speaking of cake, he was dying to slice up the grand multi-tiered cake that gal of Suspect #1 had baked for the occasion. But all the cooked food had been eaten - something Tenga wouldn’t have allowed if he’d been on watch – and so now Wish was cooking up more. A delay? Fantastic. Go figure. Another whatever though. Flow like water it was barely a rock in the pond.

Every now and then someone would ask him a question that he could answer and did so eagerly. Flexing where appropriate - which was often.

He joined the colouring station when he needed to catch his breath, sitting beside a purple and green little wynling who was both colouring in the supplied lines and drawing her own picture.

“Nice initiative kid,” he grinned. She grinned back wider even if clearly not understanding the big word.

With a quick look around to make sure Taki was still part of a hearty conversation with Kena, Prairie and a couple other Wyngrew he didn’t recognise, Tenga pulled out a couple blank sheets of paper and quickly but carefully for once – the weight of the task heavy – and drew on an ‘M’ and an ‘A.’

Done and done. He slid that into hiding for later and trotted right through the middle of the yard. Shot Marcus a thumbs up and ran right into a familiar face to greet. It had been some time since he’d seen Zinna. It kinda irked him though, that she knew him from a darker time in his life and now that’s all she knew. So, his excitement had a drive as he showed her and her plus one around to meet others, recommending food and pointed out the game stations – you gotta have a go at guessing the scars game!

It really settled in, how far he’d come, when his old pal walked away surprised and somewhat puzzled by him but in a no means bad way. Quickly replaced with excited bouncing as she joined the masses of celebration. Just like he’d had, in a way.

Or something? Eh words and thinking was for the losers.

-

“THE EGGS ARE HEATING UP!”

There was a history within the hosts of eggs hatching during the pouch party, it was sometimes even timed that way.

But never were those words said with such panic and fear.

That could mean only one thing.

Wish dropped the spatula, knowing distinctly that he trusted Ari to handle the flames and food. He ran with the wind of his magic at his back.

Tenga blazed in with the same speed almost in time with him. A cheek full of gummy candies barely chewed being swallowed whole.

Just as they’d practiced when they had gotten together to ‘bond as parents’ at Wish’s insistence. Really it had also been a way for Wish to determine if the brutish quad was fit to be a parent. At the way the guy now threw himself over the quickly heating gorge egg with even less hesitation than his own, any remaining doubt was out the window.

Or rather in. They’d kept the eggs outside just for this reason.

“Everyone take cover!” He near screeched and quickly followed Tenga in curling around the other egg.

The logic was that the egg shards shouldn’t get the momentum to cause anyone else damage if they were being blocked by a body right up against it.

In theory.

Boy they were heating up fast.

With one last desperate look over their shoulders to make sure everyone had retreated inside or so far out the yard that it didn’t matter. The fathers closed their eyes and braced for impact.

CRACK-BO-BOOM!”

An impact, like a full body shove into a wall hit him with a heat just as intense.

The twin explosions where almost deafening. And yet - Wish absently thought even as his head spun - he was pretty sure an actual explosion would have deafened them temporarily. There was a different in a gorge hatching and an explosion after all.

He shook his head clear, once, twice. Felt the trickling of a stinging sensation along his nose but ignored it as the smoke and steam billowed.

In the now late sunset light with the backing of the magic lights of the house behind him. The image before them was almost creepy.

Dark shapes jerked around in the smoke as the blocked the light in the fogginess.

A clawed paw, smaller than his own, but large, reached out form the smoke and smacked into the wet grass with its own sticky wetness.

Blinking dumbly with the speed of his thoughts interrupted by the crackling coughs from the smoke, something seemed to click with the imagery. Without out any grandeur he summoned a gust of wind with a flash of orange light and with that the cloud was gone.

Left in its wake were two baby gorges. Covered in stick and egg shells and already blinking their wide eyes open. By Chii’s light they were big.

But by no means less cute.

“Hey there-” he began but his words broke off into a cough once more.

Suddenly the rest of the family were there too.

“Dad, you’re bleeding.”

He wasn’t sure which of his kids pointed the fact out. That honestly bothered him more than placing his hand to his nose and it coming back red.

“That’ll need stitches.”

“He’s not the only one.”

Damn. Tenga was holding a massive clawed paw to his neck, streams of red bubbling between the digits to drip down his chest. He looking torn between ripping up those getting between him and the newborns and not wanting to bleed on them.

Wish almost laughed with a weird giddiness at how now of all times they shared the same thought.

“It’s fine,” Wish was saying, “We have plenty of light magic between us here.” He grit his teeth for the strain that put on his nose. He hadn’t even felt himself get the injury. Not at first.

It was really starting to sting now though. Clearly in two places. It just had to be the nose didn’t it? One of the most sensitive areas with all those nerves.

He cupped his snout and pushed himself up. Trusting his family to take care of the newest addition while he took care of his injury. He’d learnt – through a lot of pain – that he couldn’t help anyone if he didn’t look after himself first.

Retreating back from the mass of movement and still lingering smoke, he exchanged a look with Tenga over the others bending around the babies. Barely. As if the quad had been waiting for his eyes to look up, but it was cut off as something else caught his attention.

“Kena?” Tenga’s tone rose sharply as if alarm was only just registering. True enough, it looked like she’d been close to the blast, not on top of it as they had been a moment before it had happened, but for all intense and purposes right next to it. She was holding a paw to her head too.

Wish cursed quietly to himself, barely mouthing the words really.

“Dad?” Ari was there, further from the rest as he was taking on his duty with the fire seriously. But he looked worried, a little scared.

“It’s alright,” Wish pushed a smile to the surface and squeezed his hand over his injury a little tighter, “I’m thinking we call in Dr F for a house visit. Get a check on your new brother.”

Just as he’d hoped, Ari’s attention nabbed onto the new piece of information as his eyes lit up, “Brother?”

“That’s right buddy,” he walked slowly to keep himself steady and as he passed by he was allowed a ruffle of his son’s hair.
